What’s The Status Of Complex Leagues In Arizona, Florida And The Dominican Republic?
For full-season leagues, Opening Day is on Tuesday, May 4. For the only remaining half-season leagues, the Rookie-level affiliates in Arizona, Florida and the Dominican Republic, things haven’t been clear for a while.
Now, the picture is beginning to come into focus.
As of now, the Arizona League and Gulf Coast leagues are virtual locks to begin on time. There’s still a very small hint of uncertainty because of the continuing and ever-changing nature of the pandemic, but those two leagues are as close to 100 percent as possible.
As it stands, the Arizona League would feature 18 teams while the Gulf Coast League would have 21 teams. The leagues are slated to begin on June 28 and close on Sept. 18.
The Dominican Summer League’s season is a bit cloudier. Right now, there are roughly 48 teams scheduled to play in the league.
Because of the pandemic, however, teams are considering paring back things a bit, which has added an air of uncertainty. Right now, the league seems to be a 50-50 proposition, dependent on the course of the pandemic. If enough teams decide to pull back, the league simply might not play in 2021.
If the league gets going, Opening Day is slated for July 12 and the season would run through Oct. 2.
