These Colleges Produced The Most 2020 MLB Postseason Players
Playoff baseball is well underway, and college teams are keeping a close watch on the action and their former players now playing on baseball’s biggest stage.
Vanderbilt this year has the most alumni on playoff rosters with seven. The Commodores were tied for the third most alumni on Opening Day rosters with nine and the bulk of that group advanced to the postseason.
The Vandy bunch is led by righthander Walker Buehler, who got the starting nod for the Dodgers in Game 1 of their Wild Card Series against the Brewers. While Buehler is the lone Commodore in Los Angeles, the rest of the group is paired up – lefthander Mike Minor and Tony Kemp with the Athletics, shortstop Dansby Swanson and righthander Kyle Wright with the Braves and catcher Curt Casali and righthander Sonny Gray with the Reds. Vanderbilt is also represented in Cincinnati by pitching coach Derek Johnson, who previously held the same role for the Commodores.
Cal State Fullerton ranks second after Dylan Floro was added to the Dodgers' roster for the division series, bringing its total to six former players on active playoff rosters. Fullerton edged past Mississippi State and Stanford, which both have five former players on playoff rosters. Fullerton has had at least five alumni on playoff rosters for three straight years and in each of the last two seasons led the nation.
Arkansas, Florida, Louisville and Texas A&M all have four former players on playoff rosters. Gulf Coast (Fla.) and Miami-Dade (Fla.) led all junior colleges with three alumni (who were drafted and signed out of junior college) on playoff rosters.
Of the more than 450 players on playoff rosters this season, 228 went to a two- or four-year college. They represent 153 different schools, from Akron (Chris Bassitt, Athletics) to Young Harris (Ga.) (Nick Markakis, Braves).
This count credits players for their final college season before they went to pro ball. Players who went to a four-year school after junior college are counted only for their four-year school. Only players on a team’s 28-man active roster were counted.
(Totals updated entering the division series.)
