Scout’s Video View: 2020 MLB Draft Prospect Dylan Crews

As a kind of twist to our ongoing Scout’s Video View series, we’ve decided to switch it up a little bit and ask a scout who normally watches professional players to take a look at some of this year’s draft prospects.

First up, Lake Mary (Fla.) HS outfielder Dylan Crews, who checks in at No. 54 on our most recent ranking of draft prospects. Crews entered the 2020 draft cycle as one of the top prep hitters in the class, thanks to a smooth righthanded swing with solid power potential.

He struggled over the summer and showed more holes in his swing than teams wanted, but when Crews is right he can change games with a single swing and has middle-of-the-lineup offensive upside. Crews is committed to Louisiana State and you can find his full scouting report here.

SCOUT: From the looks of this video, it appears Crews has strong wrists and a simple, easy swing. There aren’t a lot of holes in the swing, but there are differences between his BP and his in-game swings.

For example, at one point he shows a stride during BP but a toe-tap during the game and launches himself more toward the ball during BP than he does during the game. In other BP rounds during this video, he makes almost no use of his lower half.

Defensively, what appears to be a below-average arm could limit him to left field. Were I drafting, I’d probably take him between rounds 2 and 4.
