Orioles Acquire Bourn From Arizona

THE DEAL

The Orioles’ slipping grip on a playoff spot took several hits in recent weeks with injuries, such as top starter Chris Tillman and Rule 5 Draft find Joey Rickard.

Rickard’s loss was compounded by an injury to stalwart Adam Jones, which left manager Buck Showalter starting Nolan Reimold and Julio Borbon in center field in the last week.

So the Orioles made a move just before the waiver deadline passed Wednesday, acquiring veteran Michael Bourn from the Diamondbacks for 2015 draftee Jason Heinrich, an outfielder who was at short-season Aberdeen.

Jason Heinrich, of
Age: 20

Heinrich, 20, was the Orioles’ fifth-round pick in 2015 out of River Ridge High in New Port Richey, Fla. The Orioles drafted him for his righthanded power, but he hasn’t gotten to it consistently as a pro yet. In 89 games, he has hit five homers in 299 at-bats while striking out 80 times. Heinrich has solid arm strength (he was a pitcher in high school as well) with fringy speed that so far has limited him primarily to left field.

Michael Bourn, cf
Age: 33

Bourn, 33, will join his fourth team in the past two seasons. In his 11th season, he’s still fast and capable defensively in center field but far from the burner who led the league in steals three straight times from 2009-11. Bourn hasn’t hit against righthanders this season (.643 OPS), but he’s a veteran stop-gap for an Orioles team desperate to fill a hole in center until Jones can return.
