Minor League Transactions: Nov. 9-11

Official minor league transactions, conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball, for the period Nov. 9-11

Atlanta Braves
Signed:
RHP Elian Leyva, RHP Ramon Morla, RHP Isaac Sanchez, RHP Jordan Walden

The Braves signed Cuban righthander Elian Leyva to compete for a big league bullpen role in 2017, when he will be 27. He spent seven seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacionale before venturing to Spain to pitch for Barcelona in 2016, when he went 4-1, 0.69 with 66 strikeouts in 52 innings.

Baltimore Orioles
Removed from 40-man:
LHP Jed Bradley (outrighted to Triple-A)

Chicago Cubs
Signed:
RHP Andury Acevedo (re-signed)

The Cubs signed minor league free agent reliever Andury Acevedo to a big league deal last offseason, but he appeared in just six games at Double-A Tennessee before having knee surgery and missing the rest of 2016. Outrighted off the 40-man roster in October, Acevedo qualified for free agency again but elected to re-sign with Chicago on a minor league deal.

Chicago White Sox
Signed:
SS Jose Vinicio

Cincinnati Reds
Released:
OF Tyler Holt

Colorado Rockies
Signed:
OF Rosell Herrera (re-signed)

The Rockies signed Dominican shortstop Rosell Herrera for $550,000 as an international free agent in 2009. He had big years in hitter-friendly parks, e.g. Rookie-level Casper (2011) and low Class A Asheville (2013), but Colorado non-tendered him in 2015 after two poor seasons at high Class A Modesto.

Herrera also had slipped down the defensive spectrum from shortstop to third base to center field to left field, but even so, the 24-year-old switch-hitter had a nice rebound at Double-A Hartford in 2016. He hit .292 with speed (36 steals) and patience (11.3 percent walks) but not much power. Herrera choose to remain with the Rockies again this offseason, even though he could have left as a minor league free agent.

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed:
RHP Yhonathan Barrios (re-signed)

The Brewers acquired reliever Yhonathan Barrios, a converted position player, in July 2015 when they traded Aramis Ramirez to the Pirates. Milwaukee then added him to its 40-man roster that offseason so that he would not qualify for minor league free agency. Barrios never pitched for the Brewers in 2016 after coming down with a shoulder injury, and he qualified for free agency after an outright assignment to Triple-A. The 25-year-old returns to the organization for 2017 after re-signing on a minor league deal.
