The Rays released 27-year-old outfielder Jason Coats from the 40-man roster on Jan. 30, then re-signed him to a minor league deal last week. He had Tommy John surgery shortly after Tampa Bay claimed him on waivers from the White Sox in January. Coats made his big league debut last season and might have figured in the Rays’ outfield picture had he not injured his elbow.
