The Reds signed undrafted Nevada outfielder T.J. Friedl for $735,000, the highest bonus ever for a domestic nondrafted free agent. Records are spotty, but the previous NDFA bonus record probably belongs to Mississippi outfielder Bobby Kielty, whom the Twins signed for $500,000 in 1999 after he won the Cape Cod League player of the year award. A redshirt sophomore this season, Friedl turns 21 next week and, like Kielty, a star turn on the summer circuit raised his profile. As the regular left fielder for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team this summer, Friedl hit .290/.362/.452 in 18 games, with plus speed and a feel to hit being the 5-foot-10 lefthanded batter’s most outstanding attributes.
