To bolster their system depth, the Red Sox signed 26-year-old Cuban righthander Jorge Hernandez, who has not pitched regularly in his homeland since 2012. He is listed at 6-foot-3 and 249 pounds.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer and head of player development and scouting Jason McLeod have now teamed up to acquire righthander Casey Kelly for there different organizations. As Red Sox scouting director in 2008, McLeod selected Kelly in the first round of the draft. (Hoyer served as assistant GM in Boston at the time.) Two years later, Hoyer and McLeod had moved on to the Padres, where they traded for Kelly after the 2010 season when they shipped Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. Now, Hoyer and McLeod have brought Kelly, who has 62 career big league innings, to Chicago on a minor league deal.

The first player from the independent, New York-based Empire League to sign a contract with a major league organization appears to be 24-year-old shortstop Nate Coronado. The Philadelphia native played collegiately at Camden County JC in Blackwood, N.J., then for Camden in the independent Atlantic League in 2015 before moving on to the Empire League in 2016, where he hit .381/.500/.619 in 32 games.

The Giants signed 29-year-old Korean third baseman Jae-Gyun Hwang to a minor league deal and invited him to big league camp. He spent the past 10 seasons in the Korean majors. Last year he hit .330/.391/.558 with 26 home runs and 104 RBIs in 118 games.
