Minor League Transactions: Feb. 4-10

Transactions involving minor league players, i.e. those not on 40-man rosters, for the period Feb. 4-10. All transactions conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed:
LHP Eric Jokisch

Atlanta Braves
Released:
RHP Steve Janas

Baltimore Orioles
Signed:
2B Johnny Giavotella, SS Robert Andino (released by Marlins, Sept. 20), OF D’Arby Myers (Southern Maryland (Atlantic))

Boston Red Sox

3B Mike Olt, OF Carlos Quentin (Puebla (Mexican))

Chicago Cubs
Traded:
OF Donnie Dewees to Royals for RHP Alec Mills
Removed from 40-man: RHP Dylan Floro (outrighted to Triple-A)

The Cubs added rotation depth by acquiring 25-year-old righthander Alec Mills from the Royals, though it cost them 2015 second-rounder Donnie Dewees. Mills shined at Double-A Northwest Arkansas last year by allowing two home runs in 12 starts to go with 9.0 strikeouts and 1.6 walks per nine innings. All three ratios regressed at Triple-A Omaha, but he has the stuff and performance record to claim at least a low-leverage major league role one day.

Cincinnati Reds
Signed:
OF Desmond Jennings (released by Rays, Aug. 27)

Cleveland Indians
Signed:
OF Wily Mo Pena (did not play in 2016)

Wily Mo Pena slammed 84 big league home runs in parts of eight seasons with the Reds, Red Sox, Nationals, Diamondbacks and Mariners before taking his act to Japan, where he played from 2012 to 2015. He added 83 more bombs in Nippon Professional Baseball and, after taking a year off, the 35-year-old slugger joins the Indians on a minor league deal. Cleveland DH Edwin Encarnacion, who signed as a free agent in January, urged the club to scout Pena.

Colorado Rockies
Signed:
1B Mark Reynolds (re-signed)

Detroit Tigers
Signed:
LHP Mike Zagurski (Yokohoma (Japan)), OF David Lough

Kansas City Royals
Signed:
C Brayan Pena (released by Cardinals, Nov. 28)
Traded: RHP Alec Mills to Cubs for OF Donnie Dewees

The Royals designated righthander Alec Mills for assignment because they required a 40-man roster spot for free agent Jason Hammel. They worked out a trade with the Cubs that sent Mills to Chicago for 23-year-old Donnie Dewees, a speed-oriented, lefthanded-hitting outfielder. Dewees relies on his contact ability and speed to provide value, though without much in the way of power or patience, he is an imperfect fit as a table-setter, a role his overall profile suggests.

Los Angeles Angels
Signed:
OF Dustin Ackley (released by Yankees, Nov. 18)

Miami Marlins
Signed:
RHP Omar Bencomo, LHP Mike Kickham (Kansas City (American Association))

Milwaukee Brewers
Removed from 40-man:

Minnesota Twins
Signed:
LHP Craig Breslow (released by Rangers, Aug. 7), C Jose Gonzalez (Gary (American Association)), OF Quintin Berry (released by Blue Jays, Sept. 6), OF Drew Stubbs
Removed from 40-man: 1B Byung-Ho Park (outrighted to Triple-A)

The Twins designated 30-year-old Korean first baseman Byung-Ho Park for assignment when they signed free agent reliever Matt Belisle. Park cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Rochester. The Twins are responsible for the three years and $9 million remaining on his contract.

New York Mets
Signed:
LHP Tom Gorzelanny (released by Orioles, Aug. 13)

New York Yankees
Released:
C Ronaldo Suarez

Oakland Athletics
Released:
LHP Tyler Painton

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed:
RHP David Whitehead (released by Pirates, Dec. 16)

The Phillies originally signed righthander David Whitehead as a 34th-round pick out of Elon in 2013. They traded him to the Pirates after the 2015 season for Charlie Morton, only to reacquire him about a year later when Pittsburgh released him. The 24-year-old Whitehead finished last season in the Rookie-level Appalachian League.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Released:
C Miguel Perez, SS Greg Picart, OF Adam Godwin

All three of the players released by the Pirates had signed minor league contracts with the organization to serve as player-coaches at various Pittsburgh affiliates.

San Diego Padres
Signed:
C Tony Cruz (released by Royals, Nov. 23), SS Erick Aybar, OF Collin Cowgill

San Francisco Giants
Signed:
2B Gordon Beckham (re-signed), OF Ryan Lollis (re-signed)

Seattle Mariners
Signed:
RHP Josh Judy (Quintana Roo (Mexican)), LHP Nick Hagadone (did not play in 2016), LHP Brandon Sisk (re-signed), C Nevin Ashley, C Ryan Scott
Released: RHP Peter Miller
Traded: C Jesus Sucre to Rays for cash

The Mariners signed former University of Washington lefthander Nick Hagadone, whom the Red Sox selected with their top pick in the 2007 draft. He logged big league time with the Indians in 2015 but did not pitch in 2016 while rehabbing from a fractured left elbow. The 31-year-old Hagadone spent five seasons in the Cleveland bullpen and recorded a 4.72 ERA with 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
