Angels general manager Billy Eppler saw lefthander Manny Banuelos at his best when the executive served as pro scouting director and assistant GM of the Yankees. Signed out of Mexico in 2008, Banuelos rose to No. 2 prospect status with New York heading into the 2012 season, but he missed most of that season as well as 2013 after having Tommy John surgery.
The Yankees traded Banuelos to the Braves in January 2015, and while he cruised through his time at Triple-A Gwinnett to make his big league debut that season, he just hasn’t thrown enough strikes, post-surgery, to get ahead of batters and make full use of his excellent secondary stuff. Atlanta demoted Banuelos to Double-A Mississippi in mid-July this year, and he spent most of August on the disabled list, so it’s unclear whether he will be able to pitch again during the roughly two weeks remaining in the minor league season.

High Class A Lake Elsinore shortstop Javier Guerra’s season went from bad to worse in the second half of the California League season, culminating in a trip to the disabled list last week with an undisclosed injury. Guerra entered the 2016 season as the Padres’ No. 1 prospect, but he recorded a .598 OPS in the first half that he somehow undercut in the second half (.574).
Guerra, who is still just 20, owns the highest walk (7.9 percent) and strikeout (32.7 percent) rates among regular Cal League shortstops, as well as the second-lowest batting average on balls in play (.287). The lefthanded batter has continued to produce power when he contacts the ball, but poor line-drive and popup rates, according to MLBfarm.com, indicate that improved swing mechanics could benefit him in 2017.
