The White Sox added three first-round picks to their organization in their trades with the Rays and Yankees. From Tampa Bay, they acquired switch-hitting first baseman Casey Gillaspie, the 20th overall pick in 2014 out of Wichita State who in 2016 cracked 18 home runs at Double-A and Triple-A. He has slumped this year, however.
From the Yankees, the White Sox acquired 20-year-old outfielder Blake Rutherford, a lefthanded batter and Southern California prep product. Lauded for his offensive potential, the 18th overall pick in 2016 hit just two homers at low Class A Charleston prior to the trade. Like Rutherford, 22-year-old lefthander Ian Clarkin is a SoCal prep. The Yankees selected him 33rd overall in 2013, but his progress has been slowed by injury.
