A fractured right elbow in 2014 derailed righthander Jose Martinez’s progress at low Class A. He never reached a higher level in three subsequent seasons. Martinez, now 23, ranked as the Diamondbacks’ No. 6 prospect heading into that 2014 season based on a fastball that flirted with 100 mph and a wicked curveball.

The Red Sox signed Western Carolina lefthander Brendan Nail for $125,000 as a nondrafted free agent after he excelled in the Cape Cod League. In 16 appearances for Yarmouth-Dennis, Nail recorded a 1.03 ERA with 32 strikeouts, 14 walks and 15 hits allowed in 26 innings.

The Reds released 2015 fifth-round righthander Ian Kahaloa, who had been on the restricted list all season after drawing a 50-game drug suspension in April. A Snapchat video from March depicts Kahaloa, a Hawaii high school product, using what appears to be cocaine and marijuana.
