Minor League Standings Update & All-Star Game Rosters — College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects

As the first half of the 2019 season wraps up for many minor league clubs, several teams have clinched the first-half division titles up for grabs from Double-A down to low Class A. Here is a look at the current standings and results for the full-season leagues that operation on split-season schedules, previewing this year’s minor league playoff races.

Eastern League (Double-A)

State Of The Playoff Race

Eastern Division: Just 2.5 games separate first- and fourth-place teams in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division with only a handful of games remaining in the first half of the season. Currently, the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) sit atop the standings at 36-26, tied with the Reading Fightin’ Phils (Phillies), who are 37-27. The Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies), are just half a game back, while the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets), currently sit 2.5 games back in the standings. The Thunder are led by first baseman Chris Gittens, who is hitting .301/.425/.555 with 11 home runs, and righthander Garrett Whitlock, who has a 3.04 ERA in 10 starts.

Western Division: The Western Division race isn’t quite as close as its Eastern Division counterpart, with the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals) having already clinched the Western Division thanks to a six-game lead over the second-place Akron RubberDucks (Indians) and Altoona Curve (Pirates). The Senators have been successful in the first half of the season due to strong contributions from lefthander Ben Braymer and first baseman Drew Ward. Braymer currently boasts a 2.55 ERA with 63 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP in 74 innings while Ward is slashing .315/.373/.622 with eight home runs.

The Eastern League all-star game will be held at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia on July 10. The all-star rosters have not yet been released.

Southern League (Double-A)

State Of The Playoff Race

North Division: The Montgomery Biscuits (Rays) currently hold a 4.5-game lead and have clinched the first-half division title. Montgomery is led by outfielder Jesus Sanchez, who is hitting .302/.361/.460 with eight home runs and 48 RBIs. Lefthander Kenny Rosenberg leads the Biscuits’ pitching staff with a 6-1, 2.39 ERA record and 67 strikeouts in 67.2 innings.

South Division: The Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers) have clinched the division, leading Pensacola (Twins) by two games. The Shuckers have been led by third baseman Patrick Leonard, who is hitting .320/.402/.475 with a team-leading 70 hits that ranks second among South Division hitters. RIghthander Trey Supak has posted a 1.91 ERA in 13 starts. Nine players will be representing the Shuckers at the Southern League all-star game, which they are also hosting.

Texas League (Double-A)

State Of The Playoff Race

North Division: The Arkansas Travelers (Mariners) ran away with the North Division led by manager Mitch Canham, who is now leaving the team to become the new head coach of his alma mater, Oregon State. The Travelers have a 6.5-game lead over second place Tulsa. Notable Travelers include outfielder Jake Fraley, who leads the league in hitting with a .326/.393/.563 slash line to go along with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs. Starting pitchers Nabil Crismatt (2.59 ERA, 54 SO) and Darren McCaughan (2.70 ERA, 60 SO) have also helped lead the way.

South Division: The Texas League’s South Division boasts one of the best playoff races in the minors. With just three games remaining, all four teams are still contending for the first-half title. Midland (Athletics) leads Frisco (Rangers) by a half game, while Corpus Christi (Astros) is just one game back and Amarillo (Padres) is 1.5 games back. Midland is facing North Division champ Arkansas this weekend. Frisco hosts Northwest Arkansas. Tulsa hosts Amarillo, and Corpus Christi travels to Springfield.

In case the division ends in a two-way tie, the first game those two teams play in the second half will serve as the tiebreaker. In the case of a three-way tie, a similar format of using second half games will also be used. The Texas League playoff procedures do not spell out any provisions for breaking a four-way tie. Because of cancellations, a four-way tie is unlikely, but it is—amazingly—still possible.

Carolina League (High Class A)

State of the Playoff Race

North Division: The Wilmington Blue Rocks (Royals) have clinched the division. Despite sitting last in the Carolina League in team batting average (.202), the Blue Rocks’ boast an impressive 22-10 away record, helping them approach the midway point of the year nine games ahead of second-place Lynchburg (Indians). Wilmington is led by outfielder Brewer Hicklen, who is hitting .267/.401/.369 with 20 stolen bases, and righthander Brady Singer’s 1.87 ERA.

South Division: The Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) have also clinched their division thanks to a similar commanding lead over the competition midway through the season. The Wood Ducks sit nine games ahead of Winston-Salem (White Sox) and 10.5 games ahead of Carolina (Brewers). The Wood Ducks are nearing the end of the first half by winning nine of their last 10 games, fueled by their high-powered offense that has scored the most runs in the league (309). Down East has been led by third baseman Ryan Dorow (.264/.372/.415) and his eight home runs. Righthander Jason Bahr has a 1.71 ERA and a team-best 58 strikeouts through 58 innings.

State of the Playoff Race

North Division: Visalia (D-backs) has a 12-game lead on Stockton (Athletics) and the only winning record in the division at 42-20. With a 26-7 record at home, the Rawhide have had a historic season and were the first team in the minors to earn their playoff berth this year. Notable Rawhide include second baseman L.T. Tolbert (.374/.438/.504) and righthander Jeff Bain (3.52 ERA, 74 SO).

South Division: Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers) has also clinched its division title. The Quakes are six games ahead of Lake Elsinore (Padres) and eight games ahead of Lancaster (Rockies), which are tied for second with even 32-32 records. Notable Quakes include second baseman Devin Mann (.274/.340/.495, 12 HR, 42 RBIs) and starting pitcher Wills Montgomerie (5-0, 3.24 ERA, 66 SO), both of whom will be playing in the California League’s all-star game.

Florida State League (High Class A)

State of the Playoff Race

North Division: Heading into the final game of the first half, the Dunedin Blue Jays were able to finish on a high note, winning seven of their last 10 games en route to clinching the North Division title. Second-place Clearwater (Phillies) rest 5.5 games back of Dunedin, partly because of its 17-16 record at home. The Blue Jays were successful in the first half of their season thanks to righthander Maximo Castillo’s 2.83 ERA in 12 starts, along with some brief stints by larger names such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who hit .267/.353/.333 in his four games with the club.

South Division: First and fourth place in the South Division are separated by just four games, but right before the halfway mark, it is the Fort Myers Miracle (Twins) that has edged out the competition, sitting three games ahead of Bradenton (Pirates) and Palm Beach (Cardinals) for first place. Fort Myers currently leads the league in home runs with 53, and the Miracle has been led by first baseman Lewin Diaz (.290/.335/.538, 13 HR) at the plate and righthander Jhoan Duran (3.28 ERA, 56 SO) on the mound.

State of the Playoff Race

Eastern Division: Great Lakes (Dodgers) has won the first-half Eastern Division title, sitting four games ahead of the second-place Lake County (Indians) with just a few days to go until the break. The Loons will be making their seventh playoff appearance in franchise history at the end of this season. The Great Lakes’ offense leads the Midwest League in runs (359), while the bullpen leads the league in saves (23).

Western Division: With the first half of the season ending in just four days, Quad Cities’ (Astros) impressive 24-9 record on the road has carried them to five-game lead over Burlington (Angels), allowing them to clinch the Western Division. The River Bandits have been excellent on the mound, leading the league in shutouts (11).

South Atlantic League

State of the Playoff Race

North Division: Delmarva (Orioles) has clinched the North Division five games ahead of Greensboro (Pirates). With a 46-19 record, the Shorebirds are led by shortstop Adam Hall (.321/.398/.420) and starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez (6-1, 2.42 ERA, 72 SO, both of whom are featured on the all-star team. Eight other Shorebirds will be on the roster for the South Atlantic League all-star game, as well.

South Division: The division race is down to the final weekend as two teams are atop the leaderboard in the South Division, Augusta (Giants) and Charleston (Yankees). The GreenJackets are scheduled for a home series versus the fifth-place Rome (Braves) this weekend. The Riverdogs will face third-place Greenville (Red Sox) in their final series before the break.
