Minor League Affiliation Chart
It’s an even-numbered year, so it’s time for the annual affiliation shuffle to kick into high gear. There’s been plenty of wheeling and dealing already, and there are several moves that we expect to happen quickly once the minor league season ends. Bookmark this page to keep up on the latest movement around the minor leagues.
Aug. 17: The Bowling Green Hot Rods and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to continue their partnership two more seasons, through 2018.
Aug. 20: The Astros announced a two-year extension of their contract with Tri-City, which was recently awarded the 2017 New York-Penn League all-star game.
Aug. 22: The Reds announced a two-year extension of their player development contract with Rookie-level Billings that will run through the 2018 season.
Aug. 22: The Giants and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes announced a two-year extension of their player development contract and will remain affiliated through the 2018 season. With the agreement, just one team in the Northwest League remains with a PDC that expires after this season. Everett and the Mariners’ agreement runs through 2016, but that seems likely to change shortly. Everett has been in the league since 1984 and has been affiliated with the Mariners since 1995. The convenience and longstanding agreement makes it easy to believe the sides will continue being linked for years to come.
Aug 23: The Phillies announced a four-year extension with Lakewood of their player development contract, which is now scheduled to run through 2020.
Aug. 25: The Angels and Inland Empire announced a two-year extension of their PDC. The agreement now runs through 2018.
Aug. 26: The Phillies and Williamsport announced the renewal of their Player Development Contract through the year 2018.
Aug. 27: The Spokane Indians and Rangers have extended their PDC for two more years, through the 2018 season. The two organizations have been partners since 2003, the third-longest affiliation in the Northwest League. Before inking with the Rangers, Spokane had been a Royals affiliate. At present, Spokane’s attendance is second in the NWL behind only Vancouver.
Aug. 29: After two years affiliating with Myrtle Beach, the Cubs have taken a liking to their high Class A affiliate. The teams linked up after the 2014 season, when the Cubs ended their longtime partnership with Daytona (their high Class A affiliate since 1993) and moved into the Carolina League. Today, the teams re-upped their agreement for four more years, stretching through the 2020 season.
Aug. 29: With just two teams remaining with expiring PDCs in the Eastern League, Akron re-upping with the Indians seemed like an inevitability. The two organizations have been together since 1989, first as the Canton-Akron Indians, then as Aeros after the 1997 season and then as the RubberDucks starting in 2014. Now, that relationship will last four more seasons after the two clubs renewed their agreement through the 2020 season. Akron’s Canal Park hosted the Eastern League all-star game this season. With this agreement, New Hampshire is the only EL club left with a PDC that expires after 2016.
Aug. 29: The Mariners announced today that they are re-upping their PDC with Clinton for another four years, lasting through the 2020 season. The two clubs have been partnered since 2009, and the Lumberkings have been in the league since 1956.
“We’re very excited to be re-affiliated with the Seattle Mariners.” LumberKings general manager Ted Tornow said in a release. “This year has been a magical year for us, as it has been a recommitment to playing baseball. We’ve been really excited about all of the great prospects and talent they have given us over the years and we look forward to the next two years with them moving forward.”
Aug. 30: The road to Citi will continue to go through Sin City. The Mets and Las Vegas agreed on Tuesday to continue their partnership through the 2018 season. Vegas, in its 34th season in the Pacific Coast League, has been affiliated with the Mets since 2012, when the organization moved from Buffalo, N.Y., in the International League.
“The Mets have been a great affiliate for us in Las Vegas over the past four seasons,” 51s president Don Logan said. “They have a tremendous farm system and the fans in Las Vegas have seen many of the Mets young stars play here at Cashman Field. Also, having Wally Backman as our manager over the past four years has been an added bonus. We are familiar with the front office personnel with the Mets. I’ve known Sandy Alderson for over 30 years and have worked with J.P. Ricciardi, and Terry Collins. They are all very familiar with Las Vegas from the time they spent here with other organizations as well as with the Mets. We are excited to extend our PDC with the Mets through the 2018 season.”
With the Mets in Vegas, just two teams are left with expiring PDCs in the Pacific Coast League: Tacoma (Seattle) and Colorado Springs (Brewers). There’s little chance that Tacoma, which has been affiliated with the Mariners since 1995, would change hands in a year it is slated to host the Triple-A all-star game, which means it appears the Pacific Coast League will stay static through 2018.
Aug. 31: The State College Spikes and Cardinals announced a two-year renewal of their PDC. Theirs is a fairly new partnership, having begun in 2013 after the Cardinals moved their affiliation from Batavia. State College was affiliated with the Pirates, which have since moved to the league’s newest team, the West Virginia Black Bears.
With this move, just Aberdeen, Auburn, Batavia and Hudson Valley have are left in the New York-Penn League with PDCs that expire after this season. Aberdeen is almost certain to stay with the Orioles (they play at Ripken Stadium and are owned by Cal and Bill Ripken, after all). Hudson Valley has been with the Rays since 1996, so it’s smarter to bet on them continuing their agreement. That leaves Batavia (Marlins) and Auburn (Nationals), but odds are those two clubs remain with their current affiliations as well.
Sept. 1: The Padres and the Fort Wayne Tincaps have agreed to extend their PDC another two years, through the 2018 season, the Tincaps announced today. The two clubs have been affiliated with one another since 1999, the longest-running partnership in the Midwest League.
“We’re truly thrilled to extend our partnership with the Padres,” TinCaps president Mike Nutter said. “In a lot of ways, we feel closer than ever to the great folks in San Diego, and this relationship has been mutually beneficial to both of us.”
With the agreement, the Midwest has five teams with PDCs expiring after this year: Lansing (Blue Jays), Lake County (Indians), Beloit (A’s), Bowling Green (Rays), Clinton (Mariners) and Dayton (Reds). Lake County, Lansing and Dayton seem unlikely to move because of longstanding successful relationships, but there could be some shuffling among the three remaining clubs.
Sept. 2: A day after the Padres extended their PDC with low Class A Fort Wayne, they did the same with high Class A Lake Elsinore. This should come as no surprise at all. The Padres and Lake Elsinore have been a wildly successful partnership for the past 16 seasons. Their first season together, in 2001, the Storm were named Baseball America’s Minor League Team of the Year. The new extension runs through the 2018 season.
With Lake Elsinore locked up, three teams remain in the California League with expiring PDCs: Visalia, Modesto and Lancaster. Modesto and Lancaster are widely rumored to be linking with the Mariners and Rockies respectively. The latter is slated to come free if the team’s current parent club, the Astros, consummates its deal with Fayetteville, N.C., to become the 10th team in the new-look Carolina League.
The Astros and the city of Fayetteville signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Aug. 17 that formalized their intention to link up starting next season with the idea that a new downtown stadium will be built by 2019.
Sept. 3: The Lake County Captains and the Indians have renewed their agreement for another two seasons, continuing the teams’ longtime partnership. The Captains have been in the Midwest League since 2010 and have been affiliated with the Indians for the entire time. That doesn’t tell the whole story, though. The Captains were in the South Atlantic prior to the move to the MWL, and were affiliated with the Indians for their total existence there as well. Before that, the franchise was located in Columbus, Ga., and was an Indians affiliate then as well. In total, the franchise has been partnered with the Indians since 1991.
With the news, five teams remain in the Midwest League with PDCs that expire after this season: Lansing (Blue Jays), Dayton (Reds), Bowling Green (Reds), Clinton (Mariners) and Beloit (Athletics).
Sept. 6: The Phillies and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs announced a four-year extension of their PDC on Tuesday. The IronPigs and Phillies have been together since the club’s debut in 2008, and have only helped bolster the Phillies’ collection of high-end franchises. Of the Phillies’ four full-season clubs, three led their league in attendance. The IronPigs finished a respectable fourth, with 611,015 fans coming to Coca-Cola Park. Reading led the Eastern League with 420, 320 fans; Clearwater brought in 181,594 and Lakewood drew 353,080. In total, those four teams drew 1,566,009 fans.
With the IronPigs off the table, just Pawtucket, Toledo, Tacoma and Colorado Springs are available in Triple-A. With that in mind, it’s looking increasingly clear that the classification will remain static for at least two more seasons.
Sept. 7: The Mariners and the Everett Aquasox on Thursday announced a four-year extension of their PDC. The agreement will now run through the 2020 season. The Aquasox have been in the league since 1984 and have been partnered with the Mariners since 1995, so it was never likely that the teams would move apart. With the announcement, the entire Northwest League is locked down through at least 2018.
“The Mariners are excited to be able to extend our relationship with the Everett AquaSox,” Mariners farm director Andy McKay said. “We are in a unique situation with having a Northwest affiliate so close to Seattle and the city of Everett and the AquaSox fan-base have always been great supporters of our minor leaguers and the entire Mariners organization. We are looking forward to continuing to bring a great brand of baseball to the area for years to come.”
Sept. 9: The Beloit Snappers announced on Friday that they and the Athletics have agreed to continue their partnership for two more seasons, through 2018. Beloit has been in the Midwest League since 1982, but has only been with Oakland since the 2013 season.
“We are very pleased to extend our affiliation with the Athletics for another two years. We have enjoyed working with their staff over the past four years and look forward to continuing this working relationship” Snappers president Dennis Conerton said. “It has been exciting for our fans to already have three of our former Snappers Players from the previous four seasons advance to the Major League level for the A’s and we anticipate seeing many more do so in the future.”
With the agreement, just two MWL teams remain with expiring PDCs: Lansing (Blue Jays) and Dayton (Reds). Both have enjoyed long, successful relationships with their current parent clubs and make sense from geographical standpoints, so it would be unlikely to expect either to switch affiliations.
Sept. 10: The Charleston RiverDogs will stay partnered with the Yankees for four more years, the team announced, through the 2020 season.
“We are excited to renew with the Charleston RiverDogs,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “The franchise is a jewel of MiLB under Marv’s leadership and that of president and general manger Dave Echols, and we couldn’t be happier to partner for another four years.”
With Charleston off the board, Augusta (Giants) is the only South Atlantic League club remaining with a PDC that expires after this season.
Sept. 10: Orem and the Angels have agreed to extend their PDC through the 2018 season. Orem has been in the Pioneer League since 2001, and has been affiliated with the Angels the entire time.
Ogden (Dodgers), which hosted the Northwest League-Pioneer League all-star game this year, is the only club in the league with a PDC that expires after this season.
Sept. 10: The Diamondbacks and the Visalia Rawhide have renewed their Player Development Contract through 2018, the team announced. The two sides have been together for a decade.
“We have been in Visalia for ten years now and are happy to continue to see improvements made to the safety of the facility from the player development stand point,” Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell said. “Rawhide Ballpark is a great little ballpark with a lively atmosphere.”
With Visalia off the board, the only two teams left in the California League with expiring PDCs are Modesto and Lancaster. Modesto is widely rumored to wind up with Seattle, with the Mariners purchasing a majority share in the team. The Rockies, then, are speculated to shift over to Lancaster, which will be looking for an affiliate after the Astros move their high Class A club into the Carolina League starting in 2017.
Sept. 13: The Padres and San Antonio Missions announced on Tuesday a two-year renewal of their PDC through the 2018 season. San Antonio is widely rumored to be part of an upcoming shuffle in the Texas League that would see the Missions move to a city to be named later, with Amarillo, Texas; Lubbock, Texas and Wichita, Kan., the possible landing spots. For now, though, the Missions are staying put. The Padres have been affiliated with San Antonio since 2007.
“Playing in San Antonio against the challenging competition of the Texas League provides an invaluable baseball foundation,” Padres general manager A.J. Preller said. “The Missions have a history of success, and we are excited to continue our partnership with such a strong organization.”
With this move, just two teams in the Texas League remain with PDCs that expire after this season: Arkansas (Angels) and Midland (Athletics).
Sept. 13: The Nationals on Tuesday extended their PDC with two of their farm clubs, high Class A Potomac and short-season Auburn, through the 2018 season. All of the Nationals’ farm clubs will remain the same for the next two years.
“We are thrilled to continue developing players in Auburn and Potomac for at least the next two years,” Nationals assistant general manager Doug Harris said in a release. “Moreover, we’re really proud to have secured our contracts with all of our affiliates through the 2018 season. That continuity across all levels of our system is such a boon to our entire organization and the talent we’re able to develop for the major league team.”
In the Carolina League, just two teams remain with expiring PDCs: Wilmington (Royals) and Carolina (Braves). In the New York-Penn League, Aberdeen (Orioles), Batavia (Marlins) and Hudson Valley (Rays) are left.
Sept. 15: The Ogden Raptors and the Dodgers have re-upped their PDC through 2018, which means all Pioneer League teams are accounted for through the next two years at least.
“We’re happy to extend our partnership with the Dodgers for another two years and are proud to be the longest running affiliate in the Los Angeles organization,” Raptors team president Dave Baggott said in a statement.
Sept. 15: The Marlins announced on Thursday that it has extended its PDC with Jacksonville another four years, through 2020.
“We are incredibly proud to announce this partnership extension with the Marlins,” Suns owner Ken Babby said. “Fans can continue to look forward to seeing some of the best talent in professional baseball coming through Jacksonville en route to Miami and the big leagues for years to come.”
The news leaves Jackson (Mariners), Mobile (Diamondbacks) and Pensacola (Reds) as the remaining teams in the Southern League with PDCs that expire after this season.
Sept. 15: The Reds and Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Thursday re-upped their PDC through 2018. To do so, they got a little bit of help from team co-owner and professional golfer Bubba Watson. Check it out.
The news means just two teams remain in the Southern League with PDCs that expire after this season: Jackson (Mariners) and Mobile (Diamondbacks).
Sept. 16: Wilmington Blue Rocks owner Dave Heller told Baseball America on Friday that the Blue Rocks and Royals extended their PDC two more years, through the 2018 season.
That leaves Carolina, as was the case in 2014, as the last Carolina League standing without an affiliate.
Sept. 16: The biggest news of the Affiliation Shuffle came on Friday, when the Braves announced they’d reached a four-year agreement to relocate their high Class A affiliate to Kissimmee, Fla., the new home of what was the Brevard County Manatees.
The move made too much sense not to work out. Osceola County is about 20 miles from the Braves’ spring training complex in Orlando, it follows logically that the Braves would do whatever was needed to land Kissimmee now that it was available.
“We are thrilled to reach this agreement with the Manatees,” Braves general manager John Coppolella said in a statement. “We are looking forward to returning to the Florida State League and to our second home in central Florida.”
With this domino dropping, there’s a lot more clarity at the high Class A level. In theory, there are five teams at the classification available: Carolina (formerly the Braves), Lancaster (Astros), Modesto (Rockies) and Charlotte (Rays).
It’s long been rumored that the Mariners are going to wind up in Modesto and the Rockies will slide over to Lancaster, so we’ll cross those off the board. There’s little chance the Rays leave Charlotte, especially considering the Rays own part of the team.
Those assumptions mean Carolina is the last city standing, which means it winds up as the new home for the Brewers high Class A players.
None of the last two paragraphs is official, but rather speculation on Baseball America’s part.
Sept. 19: The Aberdeen IronBirds on Monday announced that they’d re-upped their agreement with the Orioles for two more seasons. This seemed like a slam dunk, considering the team is owned by Ripken Baseball and plays in Ripken Stadium.
The announcement leaves just Hudson Valley (Rays) and Batavia (Marlins) with expiring PDCs in the New York-Penn League.
Sept. 19: The biggest news of the day is in the Southern League, where the Jackson Generals, fresh off the Southern League championship, will be switching affiliations starting next season. The Mariners had been partnered with Jackson since 2007, when they transitioned from a Cubs affiliate.
“We are very excited about this partnership with the Diamondbacks and what the future has in store for baseball in Jackson,” Generals GM Jason Compton said in a statement. “Arizona has consistently brought some of baseball’s top prospects through the Southern League, and the organization is also committed to being a staple in the community. Our fans have a lot to look forward to.”
With this development, there are just two landing spots remaining for the Mariners’ now-displaced Double-A squad: Arkansas or Mobile, the latter of which was just vacated by the Diamondbacks. As far as attendance goes, Mobile stayed relatively static from 2015 to 2016. Arkansas, however, was down significantly.
The Travelers, the lone Texas League team without a team attached for the next two seasons, drew 322 fewer fans on average this year than they did two seasons ago.
Sept. 20: In a very unsurprising bit of news, Toledo and the Tigers have chosen to continue their three-decade partnership. The organization and the city have become synonymous with one another.
“Toledo and Detroit have had a strong partnership since 1987 and I’m looking forward to the next two years,” Toledo general manager Erik Ibsen said. “There is no question the goal for both the Hens and Tigers is to be successful on the field. We’re dedicated to working together to help prospects reach their goal of advancing to the highest level of the game and creating championship teams.”
Sept. 20: After the news of the Diamondbacks moving into Jackson, former the Mariners’ Double-A home, on Monday, it didn’t take long for the other shoe to drop. With only Mobile and Arkansas available, the Mariners made their move and signed a two-year deal with Arkansas. That move means the Angels are left with Mobile, where the Diamondbacks had vacated to snatch up Jackson.
“The Mariners look forward to working closely with our new partner, the Arkansas Travelers,” said Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto. “It is a franchise with great fans, a great staff and a great ballpark, as well as a long and storied history in professional baseball, dating back to 1901. Both organizations are committed to the community, good baseball and an entertaining ballpark experience.”
This move, plus the inevitable shift of the Angels to Mobile (that space on the chart will remain bolded until a formal announcement is made with the length of the PDC), means the Double-A level is locked up for this year’s affiliation shuffle.
Sept. 20: Continuing the Mariners news, the team announced today that they not only had linked with Modesto to replace the since-contracted Bakersfield as their high Class A affiliate, but they bought a majority stake in the team as well. Because the Mariners now own the club, they won’t have to worry about the affiliation shuffle every two seasons.
“I think this is a great day for the Nuts, the City of Modesto and all baseball fans in the Stanislaus County area,” Michael Savit, Managing Partner of HWS Baseball IV, LLC, which has owned and managed the team since 2005, said in a release. “The Mariners are a great organization, and the commitment they are making to the franchise says a great deal about Modesto and its baseball future. We couldn’t be happier about partnering with the Mariners.”
Mariners farm director Andy McKay echoed Savit’s sentiments.
“The Mariners are committed to a strong minor league system,” McKay said. “That commitment, coupled with our desire to remain in the California League and the great opportunity to be affiliated with the Nuts and the city and fans of Modesto, has led us to this partnership. We are looking forward to many, many years of success here in Modesto.”
With the purchase, the Mariners now join the Giants as teams that own their California League affiliates.
Sept. 28: The Augusta GreenJackets today announced a two-year extension of their PDC with the Giants, taking them through the 2018 season. The two have been together for 12 seasons, since 2005.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Giants,” GreenJackets president Jeff Eiseman said. “They have been great partners and we have enjoyed great on-field success here in Augusta over the past twelve years. This is an exciting time in GreenJackets history and we look forward to celebrating many more years with the Giants to come.”
The agreement closes off the South Atlantic League for this Affiliation Shuffle. There were no changes.
Sept. 30: The final domino in the high Class classification fell on Friday when Carolina chose the Brewers to be their affiliate for the next two seasons. They chose the Brewers over the Rockies in part because of the glut of prospects scheduled to arrive there next season.
“The Brewers are excited to announce a partnership with Steve Bryant and the Carolina Mudcats,” said Brewers General Manager David Stearns. “The organization is committed to developing young talent and we strongly believe that the Mudcats will help us achieve that goal. We look forward to working with our new partner in the Carolina League.”
This means the Rockies, the other team in contention for Carolina, will remain in the California League but with Lancaster instead of their previous home of Modesto, which was purchased by the Mariners after Bakersfield was contracted.
April 4: Let the 2018 Affiliation Shuffle begin! The Salt Lake Bees, the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, announced on Tuesday that they’d re-upped their deal with the Angels for another two seasons.
“We are very excited to be able to continue our relationship with the Bees franchise as well as the fans in Salt Lake City,” Angels general manager Billy Eppler said. “We would also like to thank Marc Amicone and his staff for their efforts in this process. Salt Lake has been a first class affiliate for the Angels organization for the last 17 years and we look forward to continuing our longest running minor league partnership in the years to come.
