Milwaukee Brewers 2020-21 International Signing Preview

This is part of Ben Badler’s 2020-21 international signing day preview. You can find the Milwaukee Brewers 2019 International Signing Class here. You can also find his international big board of 2020 prospects here.

The first full July 2 signing process for the Brewers under international director Mike Groopman in 2019 was heavy on Venezuelan prospects, led by center fielder Hedbert Perez. For the 2020-21 period that starts on Jan. 15, the big targets for the Brewers this year look like they will again be position players from Venezuela.

The top player the Brewers are expected to sign is Jackson Brayan Chourio, a premium athlete from Venezuela who has split time between shortstop and center field. He’s a lean, lively 6-foot-1, 150 pounds with a fast bat and surprising ability to drive the ball for someone with his skinny build, with plus speed that makes him a potential power/speed threat who can play a premium position.

The Brewers are also expected to sign two more prominent shortstops from Venezuela, including Gregory Barrios. He’s a switch-hitter with good all-around baseball instincts, playing a sound shortstop with smooth actions in the field to go with a high-contact bat and good feel for the strike zone for 16.

The other shortstop connected to the Brewers, Daniel Guilarte, who has also hit well in games in Venezuela with good bat-to-ball skills from the right side of the plate and a good offensive approach. He’s an above-average runner with a strong arm and should stay at the position.

In the Dominican Republic, two outfielders the Brewers are expected to sign are Hendry Mendez and Manuel Vargas. Mendez is a 6-foot-3 corner outfielder who impressed some scouts with his bat and power potential, though he was up-and-down with his offensive performance at big events. He looks to be in line for a high six-figure bonus. Vargas has hit well during games in the Dominican Republic, making frequent contact with a line-drive, all-fields approach.

Manuel Vargas:

Dominican shortstop Jonathan Guzman and Venezuelan catcher Felipe Valderrama are also expected to join the Brewers’ signing class, as is Venezuelan shortstop Jadher Areinamo.
