Erie SeaWolves Announce #AlternativeFacts Night

The Erie SeaWolves have come up with a promotion to trump them all.

On Aug. 25, the SeaWolves announced Friday, they will host “#AlternativeFacts Night” at UPMC Park against what they’ve dubbed the Akron Yellow Bath Toys (That’s the alternative name for the Akron RubberDucks, of course). For those blissfully unaware, the “alternative facts” term stems from a phrase coined by Kellyanne Conway in response to a question about the size of the attendance at President Trump’s inauguration.

On Alternative Facts night, the Seawolves will celebrate their 2016 Eastern League championship. The real crown was won by the RubberDucks, but that won’t stop Erie from handing out replica championship rings to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.

“While it was a tough decision to decide which championship to honor,” the SeaWolves said in a press release announcing the promotion, “the team will celebrate its most recent one.” History says Erie has never won an EL title, but history has no place on Alternative Facts night.

“The SeaWolves’ opponent on this night may dispute the team’s 2016 title run,” the team said. “Very unfair. It is up to the fans, who are tremendous fans by the way, to decide.”

The team also noted that while UPMC Park’s capacity is 6,000, it expects no fewer than 1.2 million fans through the turnstiles on Alternative Facts night.

“Alternative Facts have become a part of popular culture in 2017,” SeaWolves president Greg Coleman said. “We plan to interject truthful hyperbole into all aspects of the game on this night from our giveaway to the between- innings fun. It’s going to be huge.”

Proceeds from in-game promotions that night will go to the Partnership for Erie’s Public Schools. After the beating the truth is going to take, they’re going to need all the help they can get.
