Cubs Trade Carl Edwards Jr. To Padres In Reliever Swap

A day after trading Franmil Reyes and Logan Allen as part of the three-way deal with the Reds and Indians, the Padres made a minor move Wednesday by acquiring Carl Edwards from the Cubs in exchange for lefthanded reliever Brad Wieck.

Edwards and Wieck both have ERAs over 5.00 and are currently in the minor leagues.

CUBS ACQUIRE

Brad Wieck, LHP
Age: 28

Like many tall pitchers, the 6-foot-9 Wieck is hard for batters to pick up but also struggles to locate his pitches. He struck out 11.3 batters-per-nine this year but also gave up 26 hits—including seven home runs—in 24.2 innings. Wieck’s 93-95 mph fastball and 83-85 mph slider are effective pitches when he locates them. The Cubs will try to help him find the command he needs to succeed.

PADRES ACQUIRE

Carl Edwards Jr., RHP
Age: 27

Once a staple of the Cubs bullpen, Edwards battled injury and control problems all season and has been in the minors most of the year. The velocity on both his fastball and curveball are down a tick from last year. The Padres will try and see if a fresh start can help him re-discover the pitcher that had a 2.81 ERA the last two seasons.
