City Of Las Vegas Purchases Cashman Field

The city of Las Vegas on Monday announced it had acquired the Cashman Center—which includes Cashman Field, the home of the Las Vegas 51s, the Triple-A affiliate of the Mets—from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and will use the opportunity to redevelop the facility. The move, the city said in a release, was designed to maximize and diversify the facility.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the city of Las Vegas to develop this site, which we’ve identified as an ideal location for major league sports,” Las Vegas mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said.  “The opportunities are endless for this site, which has great freeway access, alternative transportation options and parking.”

One of the opportunities Goodman referenced involves a soccer team coming to Cashman Field during the 51s’ offseason. The United Soccer League, in fact, has already submitted a proposal for use of the site. The LVCVA will remain in charge of Cashman Center until Dec. 3, at which point ownership will transfer to the city.

The city will also inherit the 51s’ lease on Cashman Field, which runs through Dec. 21, 2022. The 51s have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1983, and have been affiliated with the Mets since 2013.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Monday announced the resignation of GM Jim Weed, who had been in the position since 2010, to pursue other opportunities.

“It’s a tough day for the organization,” Binghamton president John Hughes said. “Jim Weed made immeasurable contributions to the team over the years. I stand by and support his decision. Family comes first and this was a decision made for family reasons. The upside to the change is the organization is in a position to continue to grow and evolve.”

Overall, Weed had been with Binghamton for 21 years, including tenures as an intern, a director of ticket operations and a manager of food and beverage.

“I have full confidence in the organization going forward,” Hughes said. “We have a young staff with a great deal of drive, potential and confidence. Great things will continue to happen at NYSEG stadium.”

In the interim, assistant general manager John Bayne will handle the team’s business operations while sports turf manager Tyler Jennings will handle the baseball side of things.
