Citadel Coach Fred Jordan Retires
Citadel coach Fred Jordan announced his retirement Thursday, two days after his team lost 8-0 to VMI in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament.
The Bulldogs went just 16-35 this season, Jordan’s 26th year on the job, but he is the Southern Conference’s all-time wins leader with 831, including 399 in conference, and he was 831-708 overall.
“I have been blessed to serve nearly three decades at my alma mater,” Jordan said in a news release. “This was a difficult decision, but I will cherish the time spent and relationships developed at The Citadel forever. My greatest satisfaction has not been championships or wins but the impact on young people’s lives that they acknowledge when they come back or reach out during difficult, exciting or significant times. None of our success would have been possible without the great people involved with this program, and I want to thank all of the former players, coaches, staff members and administration for their hard work and support.”
The Citadel won 40 or more games in a season two times under Jordan, including a 43-win season in 2010 that is second only to the 1990 College World Series team on the program’s all-time list, and topped 30 wins in 18 seasons. The Bulldogs made seven NCAA Tournament appearances under Jordan and won at least one game four times, including two wins over Virginia Tech in 1994 and 2010.
Jordan is an alum of the Charleston, S.C., school and pitched for the baseball team as well before becoming a high school coach for 12 years.
