TOP PROSPECTS
Just four of the Cubs’ Top 10 prospects from midseason are on the team’s player pool, but they’re the top four: LHP Brailyn Marquez, infielder Nico Hoerner (who has since graduated from prospect consideration), OF Brennen Davis and C Miguel Amaya. Most of the rest of the system’s prospects are grouped at the lower levels, which makes finding space for them a bit difficult.
In that context, the inclusion of 3B Christopher Morel is significant. He’s Rule 5-eligible this season and has missed significant time over the course of his career, so the Cubs can use this time to catch up on development and to see what they have with the youngster.
ADDITIONS AND SUBTRACTIONS
Since the initial release of the player pool, the Cubs have made a few additions. Most notably, they added RHP Cory Abbott, their No. 11 prospect, and LHP Burl Carraway, their No. 12 prospect, to their group of pitchers. Lefty Jack Patterson (who checked in at No. 30 in the team’s preseason Top 30) also made the group, as did righthander Keegan Thompson, 2B Hernan Perez and C Jose Lobaton.
The team also called on RHP Tyson Miller to make his big league debut, and on the Sunday before the trading deadline added lefty-mashing 1B Jose Martinez from the Rays for a pair of players to be named later.
