Charleston Sets Attendance Record, Celebrates With Records

The Charleston RiverDogs knew they were close to eclipsing their attendance record, with the mark possibly falling during the team’s final homestand at Joseph P. Riley P, Jr. Park. If the time came, they needed a way to celebrate. So, how best to commemorate a record? With more records, of course.

In anticipation of the event, the team sent its interns to local thrift stores to collect a bunch of old vinyl records. It didn’t matter what type of music, either. Engelbert Humperdinck, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Black Sabbath, Abba or Parliament, it was all fair game. Once the staff had returned with their bounty, the team stamped stickers bearing their logo, with mascot Charlie T. RiverDog (seen below) biting a bat.

Those records were then given to fans as they entered the turnstiles to commemorate the occasion. One fan even went home with a gold-painted record and a photo op with the RiverDogs’ Director of Fun (he’s done some other stuff too) Bill Murray. The team’s previous record of 292,661 fans was set last season.
