Charles Johnson, a catcher with both collegiate and professional roots in Miami, will manage Team USA at this year’s Futures Game, it was announced on Wednesday. Johnson spent three years at the University of Miami before the Marlins selected him with the franchise’s first draft choice.

Johnson played for the Marlins for the first half of his 14-season career before stints with the Rockies, Orioles, Devil Rays, Dodgers and White Sox. Johnson was a two-time all-star and won the Gold Glove three times. He was a part of the Marlins team that won the World Series in 1997 as well.

Johnson’s coaching staff will feature a kettle of former Marlins as well, including Cliff Floyd (hitting coach) and Al Leiter (pitching coach), as well as former Marlins coach Jerry Manuel (bench coach).

The World Team will be managed Edgar Renteria, author of arguably the greatest moment in franchise history. Renteria’s walk-off single in the 11th inning of Game Seven of the 1997 World Series delivered the team its first championship. Renteria finished second in the rookie of the year voting in 1996, was a five-time all-star, won back-to-back Gold Gloves in 2002 and 2003, and was the MVP of the Giants’ 2010 World Series win.

He also played in the 2004 World Series, which the Cardinals lost to the Red Sox.

Renteria will have fellow former Marlin Luis Castillo as his bench coach, but the rest of his staff will be announced at a later date.

The Futures Game, in its 19th season, will be played at Marlins Park on July 9 as part of MLB’s All-Star Weekend.
