Brewers Complete Trade For Neil Walker

THE DEAL

The Brewers went out and acquired veteran second baseman Neil Walker from the Mets in a waiver trade on Aug. 12 in exchange for a player to be named later.

Walker has been very effective for the Brewers in the month since the trade, and the Mets finally completed the deal on Tuesday, receiving minor league reliever Eric Hanhold as the previously unnamed player.

Hanhold is the latest in a parade of relief prospect the Mets have acquired the last two months. The Mets previously received minor league relievers in their trade returns for Lucas Duda, Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson and Addison Reed.

Eric Hanhold, rhp

The Brewers drafted Hanhold in the sixth round out of Florida in 2015 and developed him as a starter initially, but after middling results he moved to the bullpen this season at high Class A Carolina. Big and strong at 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, Hanhold sits 94 mph with his fastball in relief and can touch 96 with sink. His main secondary offering is an 87-88 mph slider he can land for strikes. He has a strong groundball tendency due to the natural sink on his offerings, and he performed well in late-and-close situations. Hanhold’s experience starting helps him hold up over multi-inning relief stints—he pitched at least two innings in 17 of his 27 relief appearances—but he also has the stuff to blow it out in a one-inning stint as well.

BREWERS ACQUIRE
Neil Walker, 2b
Age: 32

The nine-year veteran has hit like always this season, including a .263/.388/465 slash line in 23 games with the Brewers since coming over from the Mets. He remains a below-average defender but nonetheless remains an everyday second baseman because of his bat. He will be a free agent after this season.
