Thursday’s Stars

Touki Toussaint, RHP, Braves. It was a rough day for the Braves. The club announced that Kevin Gausman and Luiz Gohara are having to sit out with shoulder soreness and Mike Foltyniewicz is sideline with elbow soreness. They join Mike Soroka (shoulder) on the shelf, which means that the Braves have four starting pitching candidates who are currently sidelined. And then Toussaint, another starting candidate, allowed four hits and a walk and five runs in one awful inning. And after all that, the Phillies added Bryce Harper on the same day.

J.B. Bukauskas, RHP, Astros. Bukauskas has already been told publicly by A.J. Hinch that he will be headed to the minors come Opening Day. But he was impressive on Thursday. He threw two scoreless innings while striking out three. His changeup keeps getting better, giving him a solid third pitch to go with his fastball and his always nasty slider.

Austin Hays, OF, Orioles. Hays comes into spring training with less anticipation this year than last year, but he has gotten off to a strong start. He tripled yesterday and is now hitting .333.

Fernando Tatis Jr., SS, Padres. Tatis is cooling down. He only doubled on Thursday, which actually is a step down after he homered on each of the past two days.

Luis Urias, 2B, Padres. While Tatis didn’t homer, his double-play partner did as Urias hit his first spring home run.

Kyle Lewis, DH, Mariners. Lewis hit his second home run of the spring. He’s now 4-for-8 and is showing signs that he’s feeling the best he has since his serious knee injury he suffered in a home-plate collision in 2016.
