Baseball America Spring Training Prospect Report — Feb. 24, 2020

Jarren Duran, OF, Red Sox — Though Boston’s system has thinned out some over the years, Duran is a bright spot who is bearing down on the big leagues. The sweet lefty swinger with the double-plus speed showed off on Sunday with a 2-for-3 effort including a triple and a run scored. Duran’s path to the big leagues got a little clearer with the trade of Mookie Betts, and he’ll have a golden chance this season to reach Boston for the first time. To do so, he’ll have to put together a strong showing at the upper levels after an excellent showing in 2019. 

Brady Singer, RHP, Royals — The Royals’ system is built on the arms of several of the game’s best pitching prospects. Several of Kansas City’s finest arms took the mound on Sunday, including lefthander Kris Bubic, righthander Jackson Kowar and Singer, the 18th pick in the 2018 draft. Singer throws a mid-90s two-seam fastball that ranks as one of the heaviest in the minors. The Florida alum tossed a scoreless inning that included swinging strikeouts of Franmil Reyes and Domingo Santana. He has a chance to reach Kansas City in 2020. 

Sean Hjelle, RHP, Giants — A great deal of the Giants’ rejuvenated system is built upon young, talented position players like Marco Luciano, Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos. Hjelle, however, stands as one of the organization’s brightest pitching prospects. The towering righthander casts an imposing figure and shows the coordination and athleticism to pound the strike zone with a four-pitch mix. Hjelle’s frame allows him to drive his pitches down in the zone, bucking the Giants’ typical pattern of high fastballs with vertically breaking curveballs. In his spring debut Sunday, Hjelle, a Kentucky alum, tossed a scoreless ninth inning and showed a fastball that sat in the mid 90s.
