Tuesday’s Stars

Juan Soto and Ronald Acuna, OF, Nationals and Braves. The National League Rookie of the Year race keeps getting more interesting. Acuna went 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks yesterday. Soto went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double and two home runs. Acuna is now hitting .298/.368/.578 while Soto is hitting .306/.421/.529. Soto is 83 plate appearances short of the 504 needed to meet qualifying standards to lead the league with 17 games remaining. He would need to average a highly unlikely five plate appearances a game to clear that bar, but if he somehow does, he has a chance to lead the league in on-base percentage. His .421 OBP matches Joey Votto for the best in the league. Paul Goldschmidt is currently second in the league with a .403 OBP.

Nick Pratto, 1B, Royals. Pratto went 2-for-3 with a triple, walk and a stolen base as his outstanding playoff run continues.

M.J. Melendez, DH, Royals. Melendez went 2-for-4 with his first playoff home run.

Jackson Kowar, RHP, Royals. Kowar helped set the stage for Pratto and Melendez’s heroics as he threw five scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing two hits as Lexington evened the South Atlantic League championship series at 1-1.

Nick Burdi, RHP, Pirates. Burdi made his MLB debut yesterday. But the moment he has long dreamed of did not go as hoped. Burdi gave up two hits and a walk, a long home run to Tyler O’Neill and four runs (three earned). Burdi, a Rule 5 pick from the Twins, has spent the entire season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He’s been activated now and will fulfill the first month of the 90 days he will have to spend on the active roster to meet Rule 5 requirements. He will have to be kept on the Pirates 25-man roster for the first two months of next season, but if he does so after that he will be eligible to be optioned next year like any other young big league pitcher.

Kohl Stewart, RHP, Twins. Stewart had one of the odder lines we’ll see this month. He worked 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs and five walks. Most disconcertingly, he struck out no one. Stewart now has 15 runs allowed, 15 walks and 14 strikeouts, which is not a ratio that is conducive to long-term success.
