Baseball America Prospect Report — October 10, 2018

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays: The third baseman started his Arizona Fall League campaign on a strong note with a 3-for-5 effort with two doubles and three RBIs. After going hitless in his first two at-bats, Guerrero found the barrel in his next three tries, shooting two-baggers to left and a single to right field.

Forrest Whitley, Astros: The righty showed no rust after not pitching since Sept. 7. The towering fireballer put on a clinic over the first three innings, during which he struck out eight of nine hitters he faced. The lone non-strikeout was a weak grounder to second. His fastball topped at 97, and he got strikeouts with all four of his pitches: Four-seam fastball, cutter, curveball and changeup. 

Pavin Smith, D-backs: Arizona’s first base prospect, who admittedly endured a trying first full season as a professional, started his turn in the AFL on a high note by going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Look for a story about Smith later this week at baseballamerica.com  

Darwinzon Hernandez, Red Sox: The lefty pitched in relief for Mesa and cut through a talented Scottsdale lineup with ease. Hernandez whiffed five over two innings using a 95-97 mph fastball with an impressive combination of breaking ball and changeup as well.
