2019 Florida State League All-Star Teams

Minor league all-star games are less than a month away, and on Friday the Florida State League became the first group to release their rosters. The groups are highlighted by four Top 100 prospects, including one each from the Twins, Braves, Rays and Reds.

The North Division is led by Daytona third baseman Jonathan India, who has produced an .806 OPS through the first 43 games of the season and has slugged six home runs. The North roster also features two of the league’s top strikeout artists in Clearwater lefty Damon Jones and Lakeland southpaw Tarik Skubal, who have whiffed 59 and 54, respectively. The staff will be managed, in part, by Braves backstop William Contreras, who checks in at No. 97 on the most recent iteration of the Top 100.

Contreras has produced a .721 OPS this year, with one home run, and is throwing out 36 percent of runners trying to steal. He’ll be joined behind the plate by Daytona’s Hendrik Clementina. Dunedin’s Riley Adams was also elected to the team, but he has since been promoted to Double-A New Hampshire.

The North’s roster also includes Tampa first baseman Dermis Garcia, whose 10 home runs this year are tied with Bradenton’s Dylan Busby (who is on the South’s roster) for the most in the FSL. Other notables included the currently injured Clearwater outfielder Simon Muzziotti, whose .314 average is tops for the North Division and fourth overall in the league.

The South’s roster is led by Fort Myers shortstop Royce Lewis, who still garners glowing reports despite lackluster numbers. He ranks as the game’s No. 8 prospect on the Top 100 and is two years removed from being the game’s No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Those who like him see a potential .300 hitter with 20-plus homers annually, though there are those who do not see quite as loud tools and have him slotted in as a good but not great player.

Lewis will be joined on the infield by two of the most explosive infielders in the league in Charlotte’s Vidal Brujan and Jupiter’s Jose Devers. Brujan, who ranks No. 58 on the Top 100, leads the league with 21 stolen bases in 25 attempts and has struck out just nine more times than he’s walked (24 to 15). Though he has stolen just five bases this year, Devers consistently earns grades of plus or better for his footspeed. He makes plenty of contact and has an excellent feel for the barrel.

The South outfield is loaded with talent, starting with Fort Myers masher Trevor Larnach. The former Oregon State Beaver possesses massive opposite-field power, which he now must work to turn into all-fields thump. He’s joined by Pirates prospect Cal Mitchell, who has put up a .795 OPS this season, including five home runs. Palm Beach outfielder Justin Toerner, a sneaky good pick in the 28th round last year out of Cal State Northridge, has made noise all season and boasts an .880 OPS that ranks as fourth in the FSL.

Perhaps the sneakiest player on either roster, however, is Palm Beach catcher Julio Rodriguez, a 21-year-old who has flown under the radar while leading the league with a .906 OPS. He’s top five in the league in all three triple-slash categories and has thrown out 39 percent of runners trying to steal.
