2017 State Draft Report: Northern California

CROP RATING
updated_state_rating_five_star Not up to par
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

Stanford sent off coach Mark Marquess in style, earning the No. 8 national seed before losing a regional to Cal State Fullerton. The Cardinal did it despite an injury to righthander Tristan Beck, their presumed ace. He didn’t pitch all season with a back injury and didn’t even throw bullpens prior to the draft, stoking rumors of a pre-draft deal. The Cardinal was the story in the draft in NorCal as well, propping up a particularly weak high school class. Other Division I schools in the area were down as well, making it a below-average year in the region for scouts.

Justin Dillon, RHP, Sacramento State
The Hornets’ ace led them to the WAC tournament title as the club’s ace. A Tommy John surgery alumnus (2013) who missed much of 2016 with a groin injury, Dillon is a big-bodied 6-foot-3, 225-pounder who is more pitcher than power. He pitches off an 86-90 mph fastball that he commands to all parts of the strike zone, and he know how to use his slider, curveball and changeup. Nothing grades as plus as a pitch, but his command helps the four-pitch mix play up.

Darren Baker, OF/2B, Jesuit HS, Carmichael, Calif.
Baker is the son of Nationals manager Dusty Baker and played in the Area Code Games last summer.

Sawyer Pittman, SS, Reedley (Calif.) CC
An undersized (5-foot-8) shortstop, Pittman hit .341/.466/.530 as Reedley’s leadoff hitter this year after hitting .381 as a freshman.

Matt Sinatro, OF, San Francisco
Sinatro is the son of ex-big league catcher Matt Sinatro.

Danny Mayer, OF, Pacific
Mayer has plus raw power in his 6-foot-6,. 245-pound frame, though it comes with plenty of swing-and-miss.
