Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

Thanks to the high school hotbed of Las Vegas, Nevada has been a consistent producer of top draft prospects. From Bryce Harper to Joey Gallo to Erick Fedde and Phil Bickford, the state has seen a player picked in first or supplemental first rounds in every year from 2010-2015. This year will see nothing of the sort as no Nevada players cracked Baseball America’s Top 500.

Payton Squier, OF/INF, Nevada-Las Vegas
Likely a left fielder or second baseman at the pro level, Squier has shown a strong ability to hit each year during his time with UNLV, where he hit lefties just as well as righties (if not better) which helps his chances of avoiding a future platoon if his knack for hitting continues. There are questions about how much impact he has in the bat, as a sub .100 ISO hitter each year, but has walked more than he’s struck out in 2016 and 2017, with twice as many walks (28) as strikeouts (14) as a junior. The power and the positional fit are his biggest questions at the next level, and some teams might be wary of his track record in a hitter-friendly conference.

Ernie De La Trinidad, OF, Nevada-Las Vegas
De La Trinidad has a chance to be drafted based solely off of his performance in a hitter-friendly Mountain West Conference, after leading UNLV in average and on-base percentage with seven home runs. There’s a lot in the air though, as he doesn’t have a single tool that can help carry him and his frame doesn’t offer much projection.

Brett Brocoff, RHP, Desert Oasis (Las Vegas, Nev.) HS
Brocoff is a Utah commit who ranges from 88 to 92 mph with his fastball and also has an above-average curveball up his sleeve. He might be a hard sign.
