2017 State Draft Report: Louisiana

CROP RATING
updated_state_rating_five_star Solid, not spectacular
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

It’s a typically deep year for talent at Louisiana State, which means it’s also a decent year for draft talent from the state of Louisiana, but this year lacks the Alex Bregman, Aaron Nola or Mike Mahtook at the top of the class.

Gunner Leger, LHP, Louisiana Lafayette
Leger is a perfect example of a pretty common type of lefty, the 87-88 mph lefty who can succeed because he locates and has a quality changeup.

Hunter Kiel, RHP, Louisiana State
Kiel was a 29th-round pick of the Diamondbacks last year out of Pensacola State (Fla.) JC. He was awful for the Tigers (0-0, 18.47 with 8 walks in 6 innings) but he has the arm strength to get drafted.

Hunter Feduccia, C, LSU-Eunice
Feduccia, an LSU signee, hit .394/.514/.606 this year for LSU-Eunice.

Jeffrey Elkins, OF, St. Thomas More Catholic HS, Lafayette, La.
Elkins has surprising power potential in his 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame. He shows average bat speed and can loft the ball for pull-side power. He’ll need to work on his pure contact ability and non-offensive tools.

Kevin Rosario, SS, LSU Shreveport
Rosario could get some late-round interest as a senior sign middle infielder who has hit (.391/.441/.599) for LSU Shreveport. The college shortstop may be stretched to stay at the position as a pro, but he has the hands to be a defensive asset at second base.
