2016 State Draft Report: Massachusetts

Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

Over the past ten drafts, only five players from Massachusetts have been selected with a first round pick. The highest picked player out of Massachusetts in the past decade is Tony Sanchez, who the Pirates selected with the fourth overall pick in 2009.

This year, Massachusetts should have at least one first rounder in Boston College righthander Justin Dunn. There is also some depth in the Massachusetts college arms, with many scouts taking a liking to Northeastern righthanders Aaron Civale and Dustin Hunt.

The high school talent is solid in Massachusetts this year as well, with Wilmington lefthander Jackson Gillis leading the charge as the only prep player from the state in the BA 500. Gillis, a Vanderbilt commit, sent a letter to scouts just about a week before the draft affirming his intent to honor his college commitment. Morgan McSweeney also shows upside as a quick-armed righthander. He’s bound for Wake Forest.
