College Top 50 Senior Prospects
Top 50 Juniors | Top 50 Sophomores | Top 50 Freshman
By Joe Healy
Productive seniors are one of the great things about college baseball. As players who have been around the block at least once already, they provide some of that intangible leadership that is so important for a team to reach its potential. Often times, fourth and fifth-year seniors are, for all intents and purposes, extra coaches out on the field.
Navy righthander Noah Song leads the list. He ranked No. 135 on last year’s BA 500 but went undrafted, in large part because of the Naval Academy’s service requirement. Song’s raw stuff is impressive – his fastball reaches 98 mph and he’s listed at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds – and this year is sure to follow former Air Force righthander Griffin Jax into pro ball.
Mississippi State center fielder Jake Mangum and Louisiana State right fielder Antoine Duplantis will fight this spring to break former LSU star Eddy Furniss’ SEC career hits record. Mangum is a slightly better prospect and has been drafted in each of the last two years. Both should be in for strong senior seasons.
Vanderbilt leads all schools with three players on the list. In all, 41 schools are represented.
Some of the seniors on this list are here because they were drafted as juniors but made the decision to return for one more season. Others are legit draft prospects who haven’t had the type of seasons they need in order to have their name called. Some just aren’t the types of players who shine from a draft perspective but are players who simply productive at the college level.
The rankings are a combination of draft status and how players are expected to perform this spring.
