Josh Stephen

Stephen doesn't just hit, but that seems like all scouts want to talk about with the Southern California commit. He's a showcase veteran and a fixture in Mater Dei's lineup since his freshman year in 2013, when he helped the team win both USA Baseball's NHSI and the Boras Classic in California. Stephen committed to Southern California as a freshman and still could land with the Trojans, as his tools aside from his plus hitting ability don't wow scouts. He's an average runner who hustles and runs the bases smartly. His below-average arm likely profiles him as a left fielder if he's not able to stay in center field long-term, which is probable. His 6-foot, 185-pound frame produces mostly gap power rather, and his swing path is geared more to line drives and covering the plate rather than loft power. Stephen improved his stock with a sterling 2016 NHSI performance, and his line-drive bat could carry him into the first couple of rounds if he's signable.
