Lucas Gilbreath was a 36th-round pick of the Rockies out of a Colorado high school in 2014. The 6-foot-2 lefthander chose to enroll at Minnesota, where he had a rough freshman year and a dominant sophomore season in the Gophers' bullpen before being becoming Minnesota's Friday starter as a junior. This season, he held hitters to a .184 average and struck out 92 batters in 81.1 innings. His fastball varies from 87-93 mph as a starter (he touched 94 as a reliever) and his above-average sweeping curveball is a weapon for him. Gilbreath can bury it or backdoor it to righthanded hitters where it starts off looking like a ball, then dives into the outer third of the strike zone. He also throws a fringy cutter. As a pro, Gilbreath will probably moves back to the bullpen, where his fastball/curveball combo could give him a chance to be more than just a left-on-left reliever.
