Wells ranked as the No. 212 prospect in the 2020 class out of high school, but went unselected and made it to campus at Texas Tech, where he pitched out of the bullpen in 2021. He transferred to Texas State for the 2022 season and helped lead the team to a regional appearance, pitched well in the Cape Cod League and then took a bit of a step back with his 2023 performance—though his peripherals were still strong. Wells posted a 5.02 ERA over 14 starts and 80.2 innings, with a 27.9% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound righthander has a high-spin arsenal, led by a 90-93 mph fastball that has been up to 97 at peak velocity. His go-to breaking ball is a downer curveball with hard bite around 80 mph and his mid-80s slider is firm with sharp bite and occasionally looks like a cutter when it gets closer to 90 mph. Both pitches have impressive spin and above-average potential. Wells will also throw a mid-80s changeup, but he has less feel for the pitch and only used it around 6% of the time in 2023. Wells has been a solid strike-thrower in his career and landed his fastball for strikes 71% of the time this spring.
