Riggio was a highly-touted prep hitter who played on the same Thousand Oaks (Calif.) High team as A’s first-rounder Maxwell Muncy. Riggio lived up to his billing as a solid hitter as a freshman with Oklahoma State, and slashed .295/.413/.519 with 11 home runs and 14 doubles, and is a draft-eligible sophomore in the 2023 class. Riggio took another step forward during the 2023 season and hit .333/.459/.676 with 18 home runs and 17 doubles and he cut his strikeout rate from 22.4% to 17.1%, while raising his walk rate from 13.1% to 16.4% year over year. Listed at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, Riggio is undersized but solidly filled out and can put a thump in the ball, with at least average power and most of that going to the pull side and straightaway center field in games. He managed an average exit velocity of 86-87 mph in 2023, but his peak velocities neared 110 mph and he does a nice job maximizing the power he has by getting the ball in the air at good angles consistently. Riggio has a solid offensive approach and doesn’t swing-and-miss or chase at an overly high rate, though he could do a better job making contact against spin and offspeed stuff. He’s a bat-first second base prospect who has always been described as a fringy defender, though he should be fine making the routine play.

Riggio landed at Oklahoma State and was a key part of the Cowboys’ lineup for two seasons before becoming a draft-eligible sophomore. The Yankees took him in the fourth-round in 2023 and signed him for $693,000, which was above slot by roughly 37%.

Scouting Report: Riggio doesn’t have a standout tool on the card, but he’s solid across the board. The lefthanded hitter cut his strikeouts and raised his walk rate in 2023 and reached max exit velocities of 110 mph. He has a filled-out body without much room for more strength, but he’s got enough thump behind the ball right now. Riggio made it to Low-A and spent his time as a pro working to improve his swing decisions against non-fastballs. He’s a fringy defender who hangs in on double plays. He has strong makeup that will help him work to improve his trouble spots.

The Future: Riggio’s college pedigree should allow him to advance to High-A out the gate in 2023. He has the ceiling of a solid middle infielder who does a little bit of everything but won’t overwhelm in any one area.

Riggio teamed with Maxwell Muncy to make Thousand Oaks (Calif.) High a premier destination for scouts this spring. Muncy led the team in most offensive categories, with Riggio right behind him. Riggio is undersized at 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, but he is strong in his frame and has a natural feel for hitting. He has loose hands, grinds out quality at-bats and has a good feel for the barrel. Riggio can occasionally get too big in his swing and be too pull-heavy, but at his best he shows the approach and contact ability to be a potentially above-average hitter. Riggio has bulked up considerably in an effort to try and hit more home runs and started taking more aggressive swings this spring. Some evaluators think he can get to average power in time, but most think he’ll have below-average power once he starts swinging a wood bat. Riggio’s best position is “hitter” and he faces a lot of questions defensively. He doesn’t move well enough to play center field with speed that ranges from below-average to average and his hands and actions are stiff at second base. He has spent time in right field, but his fringe-average arm doesn’t fit there either. Riggio’s lack of a position complicates his future outlook, but his natural hitting ability from the left side has teams interested. He is committed to Oklahoma State.
