The Red Sox stayed in state to draft Keane out of high school in the 11th round of the 2019 draft, but he opted to attend Northeastern instead. The decision seemed to pay off for Keane, who ran his fastball up to the mid-90s and showed well last summer in the Cape Cod League. This spring, however, has been a rough one for Keane, who posted a 5.99 ERA in 70.2 innings with 50 strikeouts and 26 walks. Keane has been a solid strike-thrower, but he has been extremely hittable with lots of loud contact against him and his stuff hasn’t missed many bats. Keane has pitched at 88-92 mph, topping at 94 mph, with opponents doing plenty of damage against that pitch. His most effective offering is his slider, which flashes as an average pitch with sweeping action away from righthanded hitters when it’s at its best, though it’s an inconsistent pitch. Keane throws an occasional changeup to lefties at 80-84 mph, but it’s a below-average pitch he rarely uses. A team that liked Keane more in 2021 could take a chance on him later in the draft as a rebound candidate.
