Track Record: Santana signed with the Angels as a 17-year-old and spent his first pro season in the Dominican Summer League, where he hit .258 with a .778 OPS. After losing the 2020 season to the coronavirus pandemic, Santana put up decent numbers in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League but also struck out 70 times in 182 plate appearances for a 38.5% strikeout rate.
Scouting Report: Santana is a late-bloomer who didn’t play baseball as a youngster, so his all-around game is not as refined or advanced as that of most top international prospects. But he has the kind of raw tools, athleticism and physicality to dream on. He has plus raw power, plus speed and above-average arm strength. His plate discipline and pitch recognition, as well as his reads and routes in the outfield, have improved. The question is whether Santana will be able to hit.
The Future: Santana has looked comfortable and competent in center field, but his body will probably push him to a corner outfield spot. He may reach Low-A Inland Empire in 2022.
