College baseball is back, and that’s great news after an interminably long offseason that not only cost fans the 2020 season but also at times cast doubt on the format and viability of the 2021 campaign. So before going any further, it’s important to note that just getting to this point is a triumph for college baseball and a great thing for a sport that has taken a beating over the last 11 months.

The reality of the 2021 season, however, is that it’s going to be one that includes plenty of muddling through. Covid-19 hasn’t gone away, which means that testing and contact tracing haven’t gone away, which means schedule cancellations and alterations will be an issue, just as they have been for other college sports playing during the coronavirus pandemic.

It took just three weeks for first major conference series canceled due to the pandemic, as Wake Forest was forced to cancel its games for a week due to Covid protocols, meaning its series March 5-7 against  Boston College could not be played. Other conferences, including the Mountain West, Patriot League and SWAC, have also seen conference series lost.

We will track all of this season’s notable postponements and cancellations in this space.

Upcoming postponements or cancellations

  • May 14-16: Dayton at Virginia Commonwealth
  • May 14-15: Minnesota at Penn State
  • May 15-16: Minnesota vs. Rutgers (University Park, PA)

Teams in limbo

  • Ivy League—Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. The Ivy League on Feb. 18 announced it would not hold a conference season for spring sports. The league left open the possibility for some local, non-conference competition and will allow teams to continue practicing. “If public health conditions substantially improve and if permitted by an institution, local non-conference competition may be allowed to occur this spring,” the league said in a statement. But the Ivy League will have no tournament or automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
