Towson Hires Matt Tyner As Head Coach

Towson has hired Matt Tyner, Richmond’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, as its head coach.

Tyner replaces Mike Gottlieb, who stepped down last month after 30 years on the job.

With Tyner—a four-year starter at Miami as a player—Richmond’s offense ranked at or near the top of the Atlantic 10 in several offensive categories. In 2016, the Spiders ranked in the top 20 in the country with a .308 average, their highest in more than a decade.

“We are very excited for Matt to be our next head coach,” director of athletics Tim Leonard said in a statement. “We had a very talented candidate pool and Matt stood out with his vision of turning this program into a contender. His success as a player and coach, as well as in the business sector, made him the ideal person to be the next head coach at Towson.”

Tyner was also head coach at Division II Bellarmine, where he was 60-46 in two seasons, and top assistant at Butler in two stints for a total of seven years.

“First off, I want to thank God for this opportunity,” Tyner said. “Secondly, I want to thank president Kim Schatzel and athletic director Tim Leonard for having the faith and the trust in me to guide the Towson University baseball program. I am very excited for this opportunity as it fulfills a life-long dream.”

Tyner also played pro ball after being taken in the ninth round by the Orioles in 1980. He hit 31 homers for high Class A Hagerstown in 1981 but multiple surgeries on his right elbow ended his pro career after 1983.
