Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 31, 2021

Arizona Diamondbacks 

—No. 9 prospect Pavin Smith hit his fifth double of the spring against the Indians, raising his average to .283 in 60 at-bats.

—No. 25 prospect J.B. Bukauskas turned in his eighth consecutive scoreless appearance to close out the spring. The 24-year-old righthander struck out 14, issued no walks and allowed three hits in 7.2 innings. 

Atlanta Braves

—No. 1 prospect Cristian Pache collected an RBI double, scored, stole a base and made a nifty diving, backhand catch against the Red Sox. The 22-year-old outfielder this spring hit .184/.289/.289 with three RBIs in 38 at-bats.

Boston Red Sox

—No. 5 prospect Jarren Duran had another impressive showing, hitting a solo home run, collecting his sixth double and scoring twice against the Braves. The 2018 seventh-rounder from Long Beach State this spring hit .340 with three home runs in 47 at-bats.

Chicago White Sox

—No. 1 prospect Andrew Vaughn collected his sixth RBI of the spring on a sacrifice fly and singled against the Rockies. The 22-year-old first baseman finished Cactus League play with a .279/375/.459 slash line and two home runs in 61 at-bats.

Detroit Tigers

—No. 3 prospect Casey Mize turned in his longest Grapefruit League start of 2021 against the Rays. The 23-year-old righthander pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out six. Mize finished the spring with 27 strikeouts in 18.2 innings, but allowed 15 runs (7.23 ERA) in that span.

Pittsburgh Pirates

—No. 1 prospect Ke’Bryan Hayes rounded out the spring circuit with a first-inning solo home run against the Blue Jays. The 24-year-old third baseman this spring led all hitters in average (.431) and was third in OPS (1.208).

—No. 16 prospect JT Brubaker turned in his best start of the spring, allowing a run on a hit and two walks while striking out four in five innings.
