San Francisco Giants 2020 Midseason Top 30 Prospects Update

STATE OF THE SYSTEM
The Giants system is as strong as it has been in years. The star turn from SS Marco Luciano, coupled with high-impact talents like C Joey Bart and OF Heliot Ramos and a glut of high-upside Latin American teenagers like OF Alexander Canario, 3B Luis Toribio and OF Jairo Pomares has given San Francisco its most talented, balanced system since their buildup to their World Series run at the start of the 2010s.
1. Marco Luciano, SS
One of the most talented teenagers in the game, Luciano opened summer camp with a bang by hitting a home run on his first swing in an intrasquad game. He was likely to start the year at low Class A but instead will develop as much as possible at the team’s alternate training site.
2. Joey Bart, C
Bart worked hard over the offseason to improve his defense. Specifically, he improved his blocking and his accuracy on throws to second base. The Giants were extraordinarily impressed with Bart in summer camp and expect big things out of him very soon.
3. Heliot Ramos, OF
Ramos made it to Double-A in 2019 and has the potential to bring a combination of average and power to the Giants lineup. There’s a chance he sticks in center field, but if he has to move to right field his bat packs enough impact to profile at the position.
4. Hunter Bishop, OF
Bishop tested positive for COVID-19 in June and was left out of the Giants initial player pool. His pro debut wasn’t what he’d like, but he still has a ton of tools with which to work. His main task is to close holes in his swing once he recovers and reports to the Giants’ alternate training site.
5. Alexander Canario, OF
One of the team’s many talented Latin American prospects, Canario made a big impression in 2019 by getting to short-season Salem-Keizer and producing a 1.000 OPS as a teenager. He was added to the Giants’ player pool as a teenager this season and has the offensive tools to profile in a corner outfield spot.
6. Patrick Bailey, C
The Giants’ first-rounder from the 2020 draft, Bailey brings a powerful, switch-hitting profile along with stellar defense behind the plate. Defensively, he’s ahead of where Joey Bart was when Bart was drafted, but Bailey doesn’t have quite the same impact potential as a hitter.
7. Luis Toribio, 3B
Toribio was extremely impressive as an 18-year-old in 2019, when he did enough in the Rookie-level Arizona League to earn a bump to the college-heavy Northwest League. He offers a mature approach and enough bat to fit at the hot corner, but he’ll be working out on his own this year after the Giants left him out of their player pool.
8. Seth Corry, LHP
Corry broke through in a big way in 2019 when he struck out 172 hitters, tied for fourth in the minor leagues. The Giants still want to see further improvements with his command and control and surprisingly did not add him to their 2020 player pool.
9. Luis Matos, OF
Marco Luciano jumped onto the national prospect scene in 2019. The Giants thought Matos had a chance to do the same in 2020 before the minor league season was canceled. Matos has a chance to have five average or better tools, and will look for a springboard season in 2021.
10. Sean Hjelle, RHP
Because of his 6-foot-11 height, Hjelle is one of the few pitchers in the Giants system who is not asked to adhere to working with fastballs up and vertical breaking balls. He profiles toward the back of a rotation, but the Giants surprisingly omitted him from their player pool after he reached Double-A last season.

SYSTEM STRENGTHS
The Giants system is incredibly balanced. If the season had commenced as normal, the Giants would have potentially placed top prospects at each of the four full-season affiliates, including Luciano at low Class A and Bart and Ramos at one of the two upper-level affiliates.
SYSTEM WEAKNESSES
The Giants have Top 30 prospects at every position, but if you had to pick a weakness, it’s that neither of their top corner-infield prospects—3B Toribio and 1B Logan Wyatt—profile as classic mashers at the position.
PLAYER POOL TIDBITS
Despite being just 18 years old, Luciano was added to the team’s 60-man player pool and will spend his summer developing at the team’s alternate site in Sacramento. First-rounder Patrick Bailey also made the cut, as did Toribio, Canario and fireballing righthander Camilo Doval, who made the team’s Opening Day roster.
HURTING
Nobody on the team is currently injured, but Bishop tested positive for COVID-19 and is not part of the team’s 60-man player pool.
