As we continue to get closer to the 2019 Baseball America Prospect Pad presented by Louisville Slugger, we are diving into past interviews.

Pete Alonso has quickly become a star in the big leagues this year and in 2018 he joined the Baseball America Prospect Pad. At that time of the interview, the 2016 second round pick was quickly rising through the minors. He had just recently been promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas after hitting .314/.440/.573 at Double-A Binghamton early in the year. In his interview he talked about what it means to participate in the Futures Game.

“It means a lot. Clearly there are some ultra, ultra talented and successful baseball players here and I just feel happy to be here. It just means I’m apart of the best in the minor leagues. Hopefully I can just continue my success, and one day play in the Major Leagues and then stick,” Alonso said.

Not only has Alonso played in the Major Leagues, he has dominated the Major League up to this point. But at the time of the Prospect Pad interview, Alonso was still trying to make the transition to Triple-A.

“There are a lot of older savvy vets around and they know how to pitch…I’ve seen a lot more cutters and right on right changeups. It’s not just fastball, slider,” Alonso said regarding the pitchers at Triple-A.

Alonso made the adjust to the advanced pitching going on to hit .260/.355/.585 at Triple-A in 2018 and making the Mets opening day roster in 2019.
