Notable Sept. 1 2017 Callups

Baseball America looks at some of the notable additions as teams expand to 40-man rosters.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Arizona Diamondbacks

3ds_diamondbacks21Most Notable: RHP Silvino Bracho,  C John Ryan Murphy,  RHP Braden Shipley
Role Players: RHP J.J. Hoover

Atlanta Braves Most Notable: 3B Rio Ruiz, LHP Max Fried.
Role players: C Tony Sanchez.

Chicago Cubs

3ds_cubs76Most Notable: RHP Dillon Maples. The Cubs nearly released Maples in spring training before he reinvented himself as a reliever. He struck out nearly 35 percent of batters at Triple-A. C Victor Caratini is the Cubs’ No. 1 prospect after trades drained the farm system.

Cincinnati Reds

Most Notable: RHP Ariel Hernandez. Hernandez’s walk rate is unplayable, but his curveball and fastball velocity still make him an interesting project.

Role Players: SS Zach Vincej. The 37th-round pick from Pepperdine in 2012 showed uncommon power in the Arizona Fall League but has not carried that into 2017. Still, his glovework makes him interesting and he’s Rule 5 eligible this winter.

Colorado Rockies 3ds_rockies84
Most Notable: RHP Jeff Hoffman, INF Ryan McMahon
Role Players: OF Mike Tauchman, C Tom Murphy

Los Angeles Dodgers

3ds_dodgers79

Most Notable: OF Alex Verdugo.  Check out our What To Expect on the Dodgers’ outfielder.
Role Players: 1B/OF O’Koyea Dickson, RHP Wilmer Font, RHP Fabio Castillo

Miami Marlins

Miami Marlins

Most Notable: 3B Brian Anderson will make his big league debut after a strong AFL in 2016 and hitting a career-high 22 homers, including raking at Triple-A (.339/.416/.602). He’s also an above-average defender with a strong arm. LHP Dillon Peters is just 5-foot-9, but holds his velocity (92-94 mph) well and pitches with a moxie that belies his size.

Milwaukee Brewers 3ds_brewers79

Most Notable: OF Brett Phillips, RHP Brandon Woodruff
Role Players: RHP Junior Guerra, LHP Wei-Chung Wang

New York Mets

3ds_mets81

Most Notable: RHP Jacob Rhame. Acquired for Curtis Granderson, Rhame is one of several righthanded relievers the Mets added at the trade deadline when they offloaded Lucas Duda, Granderson, Jay Bruce, Neil Walker and Addison Reed. Rhame, 24, relies heavily on a mid-to-upper 90s fastball and cleaned up his arm stroke, enabling him to throw more strikes.
Role Players: RHP Jamie Callahan. Callahan’s weapons are a hard slider and fastball that sits 94-96 mph, as well as an aggressive mound approach, but his wavering command is an issue for a high-leverage reliever.

San Diego Padres padres-2013

Role Players: LHP Kyle McGrath, RHP Jose Valdez

San Francisco Giants 3ds_giants81

Most Notable: LHP Steven Okert. The Giants No. 13 prospect entering the year will get another crack at the majors after posting a 6.75 ERA in 21.1 innings in his earlier stints.
Role Players: RHP Derek Law, C Tim Federowicz

St. Louis Cardinals

3ds_cardinals78

Most Notable: RHP Jack Flaherty is set to make his big league debut today. RHP Sandy Alcantara has a big-time fastball and intriguing-if-inconsistent secondary pitches, with projection remaining.
Role Players: OF Harrison Bader got 21 at-bats earlier this season. Bader has an aggressive approach and a reputation for ambushing first pitches.

Washington Nationals 3ds_nationals78

Most Notable: RHP Erick Fedde, C Raudy Read.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore Orioles

3ds_orioles84

Most Notable: C Chance Sisco
Role Players: RHP Jimmy Yacabonis

Boston Red Sox

3ds_redsox83

Role Players: C Blake Swihart, RHP Austin Maddox

Chicago White Sox 3ds_whitesox84

Most Notable: RHP Carson Fulmer
Role Players: LHP David Holmberg

Cleveland Indians 3ds_indians83

Most Notable: C Francisco Mejia. Check out our What To Expect on the Indians’ No. 1 prospect.
Role Players: OF Greg Allen, RHP Adam Plutko, LHP Shawn Morimando

Detroit Tigers

3ds_tigers83

Most Notable: LHP Jairo Labourt
Role Players: INF Efren Navarro

Kansas City Royals

3ds_royals29

Most Notable: INF Raul Mondesi
Role Players: C Cam Gallagher, OF Terrance Gore, OF Paulo Orlando, RHP Andres Machado

Los Angeles Angels 3ds_angels84

Most Notable: RHP Noe Ramirez. The Cal State Fullerton product will get a chance to pitch in the MLB stadium just six miles down the I-57 from his college campus.
Role Players: INF Nolan Fontana, C Carlos Perez, LHP Jason Gurka.

Minnesota Twins 3ds_twins77

Most Notable: LHP Nik Turley will give Los Angeles’ Harvard-Westlake High four big league alumni on big league pitching staffs. Unlike Jack Flaherty (2014), Max Fried (2012) and Lucas Giolito (2012), Turley was not a first-round pick; he was a 50th-rounder in 2008 by the Yankees. He’s been up before, but now all four Harvard-Westlake pitchers have been big leaguers in the same year.
Role PlayersNiko Goodrum is the ultimate utility player who has played center and right field at Triple-A Rochester this year to go with his usual time at third base, shortstop and second. He’s also a switch-hitter with a longish swing but a career-high 13 homers this season.

New York Yankees 3ds_yankees84

Most Notable: RHP Ben Heller was a part of the Andrew Miller trade but obviously overshadowed by Clint Frazier and Justus Sheffield. Heller is already 26, but is on the 40-man roster, which will be tight come the fall. The Yankees want to see what they have in Heller, who averaged 13 strikeouts per nine innings at Triple-A.
Role Players: C Erik Kratz was acquired from the Indians for cash and will likely see time with suspensions due for Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine, stemming from the brawl with the Tigers.

Oakland Athletics 3ds_athletics77

Most Notable: Franklin Barreto got 42 big league at-bats earlier this season and clubbed a couple of home runs but also struck out 18 times. Barreto’s positional future is unclear—it’s probably second base—but his bat will carry him.

Seattle Mariners 3ds_mariners80

Most Notable: RHP Andrew Moore, C Mike Marjama
Role Players: RHP Dan Altavilla

Texas Rangers

3ds_rangers78

Role Players: RHP Paolo Espino, INF Will Middlebrooks

Toronto Blue Jays
