The start of the Major League Baseball season is less than a week away, which means summer camp is in full swing. That means there is plenty of time for prospects to compete in intrasquad and exhibition games. Each day during the week we will be providing a roundup from summer camp that includes highlights, debuts of 2020 draftees and more.

Chicago Cubs

—The Cubs on Monday added 2020 second-round pick Burl Carraway to the team’s player pool. The lefthander, who was selected 51st overall, possesses a potential 70-grade fastball that sits 96-98 mph to go along with a 1-to-7 curveball that could become plus with better control.

Cleveland Indians

—Indians’ No. 22 prospect Yu Chang on Monday went 1-for-2, collecting a single against the Pirates in the team’s exhibition game.

Detroit Tigers

Zack Hess, The Tigers’ 2019 seventh-round pick, on Monday pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two batters during the team’s intrasquad game. The righthander, who was added to the player pool on Sunday, went 1-1, 2.60 with 10 saves in 22 appearances to finish the season at low Class A West Michigan in his 2019 debut.

Matt Manning, the Tigers’ No. 2 prospect, pitched two innings on Monday during the Tigers’ intrasquad game. The righthander sat 92-96 on his fastball, but he struggled to use his plus curveball, according to MLB reporter Jason Beck.

New York Yankees

—Yankees’ No. 3 prospect Deivi Garcia on Monday pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), four hits and two walks while striking out one batter in an exhibition game against the Phillies. The righthander in 2019 pitched to a 1-3, 5.40 mark at Triple-A in 11 appearances (six starts). He also made 11 starts at Double-A and four at high Class A.

Oakland Athletics

—Athletics’ No. 2 prospect A.J. Puk on Monday was placed on the injured list with a strained shoulder. The lefthander last year made his major league debut just one year removed from Tommy John surgery, appearing in 10 games, posting a 3.18 ERA and striking out 13 batters.

Philadelphia Phillies

—Phillies’ No. 2 prospect Alec Bohm on Monday picked up another hit, going 1-for-4 with a single in the team’s exhibition game against the Yankees.

San Diego Padres

—Padres’ No. 17 prospect Edward Olivares on Monday collected a double in the team’s exhibition game against the Angels. The outfielder had a breakout year in the Texas League in 2019, leading the circuit in runs scored and total bases, finishing second in RBIs and third in stolen bases.

Tampa Bay Rays

—Rays’ No. 8 prospect Ronaldo Hernandez on Monday in his first intrasquad game collected two hits, including an RBI double and a single, and threw out a would-be basestealer at second base. The catcher in 2019 hit .265/.299/.397 with nine home runs and 60 RBI at high Class A Charlotte.

Texas Rangers

—Rangers’ No. 3 prospect Leody Taveras on Monday hit a home run to deep center field during the team’s intrasquad game. The outfielder has yet to play above Double-A, but has impressed manager Chris Woodward, according to the Dallas Morning News, as a speedy, defense-first outfielder.

Toronto Blue Jays

—Blue Jays’ 2020 first-round pick Austin Martin on Monday showed off his smooth swing while taking live batting practice. Martin combines a 70-grade hit tool with above-average power.

Nate Pearson, the Blue Jays’ top prospect, on Monday also got in some work with a bullpen session. The righthander rose in 2019 from high Class A to Triple-A, finishing the year with a 5-4, 2.30 mark with 119 strikeouts in 101.2 innings.
