Vying for their first postseason berth since 2001, the Mariners made a move to improve their offense Tuesday, acquiring outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Marlins minor league shortstop Bryson Brigman, who ranked as the organization’s No. 27 prospect entering the season.

The Mariners also sent the Marlins international slot money. The Maybin trade comes on the heels of multiple deals for bullpen help, as the Mariners added relievers Sam Tuivailala, Zach Duke and Adam Warren in the previous days. Seattle is in striking distance for both the American League West and AL wild card races.

MARINERS ACQUIRE:

Cameron Maybin, OF
Age: 31

Maybin is a clear upgrade in center field over incumbent Guillermo Heredia, who posted an anemic .418 OPS in June and is slashing .214/.241/.375 in July. The righthanded-hitting Maybin is batting .251/.338/.343 on the season, but he’s been hot of late, slugging all three of his home runs in July while batting .309/.427/.456 in 23 games. He should lengthen the Mariners’ lineup while also playing excellent defense in center field.

MARLINS ACQUIRE:

Bryson Brigman, SS
Age: 23

The Mariners’ No. 27 prospect entering the season, Brigham has taken strides in his third year in the system after two consecutive rough seasons at the plate. Showcasing a quieter, taller approach in the box, the righthanded-hitting Brigman batted .304/.373/.391 in 381 at-bats with high Class A Modesto and led the California League in hits. While he’s making more contact, scouts remain doubtful Brigman will hit for much power, and his lack of bat speed and size limits his offensive upside. Brigman has looked better at shortstop, where he’s shown better hands and more confidence. His arm strength has been in question in the past, earning fringy grades, but he’s shown more zip this season. A plus runner, Brigman offers plenty of athletic ability, giving him a chance to carve out a utility role in the majors if he can continue to hit.
