Joe Girardi Named Team USA Manager For Olympic Qualifying

USA Baseball announced Wednesday that Joe Girardi has been hired as Team USA’s manager for Olympic qualifying. 

The former Marlins and Yankees manager will manage Team USA during the Premier12 Tournament in Mexico and Japan in November. Premier12 is the first opportunity teams have to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“It is truly an honor to be named the manager for the USA Baseball Premier12 Team,” Girardi said in a statement released by USA Baseball. “I was fortunate to wear this very special jersey as a player on the national team in 1985, and it is a privilege to be chosen to wear it once again as a manager. I look forward to leading Team USA as we strive for a gold medal and look to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”

Girardi, 54, won three World Series’ as a player with the Yankees and managed the Yankees to the 2009 World Series championship as well. He played on the 1985 USA Collegiate National Team as a catcher at Northwestern. He currently works as an MLB Network analyst.

The rest of Team USA’s coaching staff will be announced at a later date. The team will be made up of non-40 man roster players and is scheduled to be announced in late September or early October.
