Jeremy Jeffress Headed Back To Milwaukee

THE DEAL

This is how a team is supposed to rebuild. The Brewers sent Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress to the Rangers a year ago at the trade deadline in a deal that netted Top 100 Prospects Lewis Brinson and Luis Ortiz.

Now just a year later, Lucroy has been traded to the Rockies for a player to be named and Jeffress is headed back to the Brewers in a deal that sends Texas a 25-year-old Double-A reliever. The modest price brings Jeffress back to Milwaukee as the team tries to hang on in the National League Central playoff race.

RANGERS ACQUIRE
Tayler Scott, rhp
Age: 25

Tayler Scott is seen by scouts as a solid organizational player. He was originally drafted by the Cubs, was released coming out of spring training in 2016, signed with independent Sioux City and then was signed out of indy ball by the Brewers. A South African native who moved to the U.S. during high school, Scott has a solid low-90s sinker but lacks a true plus pitch, which explains in part the high walk rates he’s posted since reaching Double-A in 2016 as he’s been forced to nibble. He is durable.

BREWERS ACQUIRE
Jeremy Jeffress, rhp
Age: 29

Jeremy Jeffress is headed back to the site of his best success. Just a year after he was traded to Texas by the Brewers, he’s returning to Milwaukee, now that the Brewers are a playoff contender. This is actually Jeffress’ third tour with the Brewers. He was Milwaukee’s first-round pick in 2006 and made it to the majors with Milwaukee before being traded to Kansas City in the Zack Greinke trade. Jeffress has struggled this year to match his previous success mainly because his always-fringy control has taken a step back. As a low-cost power arm acquisition, the Brewers can hope his return to the National League can provide a boost. He’s arbitration eligible after the season.
