Jacksonville Suns Get A New Name

Continuing this offseason’s trend of wacky team rebrands, the Jacksonville Suns announced on Wednesday that they would rebrand for 2017 and become the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

That’s right, the Jumbo Shrimp.

“Today marks a new chapter for baseball here in Northeast Florida. Jacksonville’s incredible history as a baseball city dates back more than a century. That history carries on and is now matched with an identity epitomizing family entertainment that our fans have come to learn Minor League Baseball is all about,” Jumbo Shrimp owner Ken Babby said in a statement. “The Jumbo Shrimp will be a fun, fresh face in town, and I am excited for our fans to see them come to life next spring.”

Babby is also part of the ownership group of the Akron Rubberducks, which themselves were rebranded from their former identity as the Aeros after the 2013 season. The new logos, which feature a muscular shrimp in various poses, were designed by Brandiose, the same group that helmed rebrands or logo changes for 11 teams entering this past season.

They’ve also been in charge of makeovers for other minor league teams, including the Brevard County Manatees’ recent transformation into the Florida Fire Frogs.

“Jacksonville is one of the premier destinations in all of Minor League Baseball,” Brandiose’s Casey White said. “Our goal was to capture the fun of the Jumbo Shrimp and communicate it through the look and feel of the new identity.”

The Binghamton Mets, which will announce their new name and logos on Thursday, also selected Brandiose to oversee their changes. The same can be said for the Staten Island Yankees, who will have a new identity in 2017.
